New! Red Heart With Love Better Half Yarn

There is another new yarn in town! This is Red Heart With Love Better Half. The better half is referring to the fact that it is a 50/50 Cotton and Acrylic Yarn. I love cotton blend! It makes really nice hats, scarves, baby blankets…etc. And, it’s not stiff which makes it so easy to use for crochet.

I really am lamenting the loss of a Joann’s right now, as this yarn was headed to stores directly last summer. Instead, Yarnspirations is only selling it on their site. But I think if you were able to feel it you’d put a skein or two in your cart to make this darling hat and give it a try.

There are lots of great colors available, a few pastels, a few brights, and a nice variety of warm tones. Hannah is already working on a Boden-inspired scarf, and I think I’m going to do a Toy Room Christmas Chevron. So stay tuned as we work on more projects with Better Half.

The hat pattern I used to try out this yarn is the Red Heart Shell Stitch Basic Hat Pattern which is available as a free pdf downloadable pattern from Yarnspirations.com. I substituted the yarn for the Better Half Yarn but still used the same hook size, H-5mm, and the same stitch count for the brim (72 rows).

I was playing yarn chicken to finish the hat with one ball of yarn and had to skip the final round of single crochet so I’d have enough to sew the top of the hat together…so get 2 skeins of Red Heart Better Half to make sure you have all the yarn you need.

If I had wanted to make a yarn pom pom, I would have needed the second skein. But lately, I love a faux fur pom on top. They are snap on, so the only thing I am doing after I gather the hat in at the top is attaching the bottom half of the snap with my tapestry needle.

I buy the faux-fur pom-poms from Amazon. I use a 6-inch pom for adult hats or when I want that giant pom look, or I use the 4-inch pom for little kids. I chose a 4-inch hat for this hat as I’m going to send it to baby Nora.

This is an awesome pattern, though, and works up in about 2-3 hours. It fit my adult 22 inch circumference head, but also I tried this on my 3 year old grand-daughter and it was only a tiny bit big for her. I would make it not as tall for her, but keep the same 72 row brim.
