My favorite thing to do lately is just play with stitches, two-row repeats, and see what happens.
I like making sure I can carry yarn up the side of the work to save weaving in the ends. I also wanted to see a braided look and incorporate slip stitches in some fashion.

This blanket has two different looks. Each side is different, and I can’t decide which side I like best. I wanted a border that wasn’t just a shell, and by adding just a few chains between the double crochets, I achieved a little peak that I then added picots to.
The only thing I couldn’t quite get evenly worked out was the corners, but I decided that just continuing on without making it completely perfect was okay with me. I loved the look of the peaks, as having them just around the corners was fine.
Once I worked out what the stitches for every two rows, it was an easy to remember repeat and it was a nice relaxing project. I made it on the small side, perfect for a car seat cover-type blanket, one you’d like to take to the grocery store or have for a stroller ride.

Also, I think this would make a very nice baby shower gift. I found a children’s book that ties in with the theme of crochet called HEART STRINGS.
It’s a beautifully written story about how love strings us all together, and it pairs so well with a handmade crochet blanket.

I hope that you enjoy this little project. It really is a beautiful blanket. I also think it can work with any weight of yarn. Or I think it would be beautiful if the contrasting color were a variegated yarn and there would be some naturally occurring color changes. Maybe something I would like to do in the future.
The video tutorial and printable pdf is at the end after the pattern.
