Crochet Spring Picnic Dishcloths

Hello friends! We are so excited to let you know that we have another limited-time only curated shade collection coming soon!

Our new Soft Bloom Collection is made up of 6 exclusive shades of Bernat Softee Cotton that you can use for anything from dishcloths to baby blankets to crochet clothing. Bernat Softee Cotton is one of our favorite yarns and we are so excited to have these beautiful colors to work with!

We wanted to give you a glimpse of what these shades look like once they are worked up so I made some fun spring dishcloths to have on hand for the next few months for all the birthday/Easter/Mother’s Day gifts I’ve got coming up! I love when I can find some beautiful hand towels and some soap or lotion to gift with a dishcloth!

The Soft Bloom Collection should be available to purchase on Yarnspirations.com starting the week of March 16th, so be sure to sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram so we can let you know as soon as the collection is live!

Now for the pattern – I made the grid pattern of these dishcloths by carrying yarn throughout my work so I could easily switch back and forth between the two colors. If you’ve never carried yarn in a project before, here is a video tutorial you can watch before you get started!

Materials

for 6 dishcloths

Bernat Softee Cotton or Baby Softee Cotton (60% cotton, 40% acrylic, 120 g/4.2 oz, 232 m/254 yds)

1 skein Cotton, 1 skein each Taupe, Coral Clay, Dusty Rose, Moss Green, New Blue, Deep Rose

Size H/5.00mm hook, Size G/4.00mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 8.5 in x 10 in

Gauge 2 in = 9 st and 8 rows of pattern

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, yarn over (YO), pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook.

Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through loop on hook.

Pattern

With size H/5.00mm hook, chain 29 with White Color (Cotton). (Pattern repeat is 4 multiplied by an odd number, plus 1.)

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SC in each of the first 4 chains. On the 4th stitch, pull through with New Color before finishing the SC. Lay the Cotton color across the top of your work and crochet over it as you work 1 SC in each of the next 4 chains with New Color. Continue switching colors every 4 stitches, always crocheting over whichever yarn is not in use. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: Wrap the New Color around the side of your work and continue crocheting over it as you work 4 SC with White Color. Continue switching colors every 4 stitches, always crocheting over whichever yarn is not in use. CH 1 and turn.

Rows 3 – 4: Repeat row 2. At the end of row 4, pull through with New Color before finishing the last SC of the row. CH 1 and turn.

Rows 5 – 7: Work 1 SC in each stitch across the row with New Color, carrying the White Color across the top of your work and crocheting over it as you go. CH 1 and turn at the end of each row. At the end of row 7, pull through with White Color before finishing the last SC of the row. CH 1 and turn.

Rows 8 – 11: Repeat row 2.

Repeat rows 5 – 11 until you have 5 rows of white squares.

Border

At the end of your last row, pull through with New Color before finishing the last SC. Cut White Color and leave a tail to weave in later.

Round 1: CH 1 and begin working down the side of the dishcloth. Work 1 round of SC around the dishcloth, working 1 SC per row on the sides, 3 SC in each corner and 1 SC per stitch on each end. When you reach the starting corner slip stitch into starting stitch.

Round 2: Switch to size G/4.00mm hook. CH 4.

Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work SC in each of the 3 chains back toward the edge of the dishcloth. *SL ST into the next stitch, and in the next stitch. Turn and work in the back loops of each of the 3 SC you just made. CH 1 and turn. Work back down the SC in the back loops only. (Be careful not to miss the 3rd stitch, it sometimes pulls tight and is hard to see.) Repeat from across * each side.

Corners: When you reach a corner space, only SL ST once, before turning and *working the SC back up to the top of the border. Return and SL ST once into the corner space. Repeat from * two more times, then resume slip stitching into each of the next two stitches and working across the side.

(If your corner isn’t looking rounded enough, you can slip stitch an additional time into the corner and work up and down an extra time with SC, or if it is causing the border to ripple, you can slip stitch into the corner only two times instead of three.)

When you reach the starting corner, work the corner the same way as previous corners. Stop when you get to the top of the border and tie off, then use a tapestry needle to sew corners together. Then tie off, weave in any additional ends and enjoy your dishcloth!
