Hello, Hannah here, with a new cozy fall throw! Last year I accidentally ordered way too much Cream Bernat Maker yarn when I was making my Christmas V-Stitch Throw, so I decided now was the time to finally use it and make another giant throw!

If you’ve never used Bernat Maker yarn before, it is a lovely cotton/nylon tube yarn that works up so nice and is very easy to work with. The shades I used for this blanket are called Cream and Fawn, but there are lots of other beautiful shades you can choose from both on the Yarnspirations website and on Amazon!

For this blanket I used a modified version of half double crochet and carried my yarn throughout my work so that I could easily change colors to create the plaid pattern. I did my best to explain how to do this in the pattern, but if you’ve never carried yarn through your work before, here is a full video tutorial for this pattern!

I’d definitely recommend working up a small swatch to practice the technique of carrying yarn before starting your whole blanket if you’ve never carried yarn through a project before.

Since carrying yarn does make the stitches work up a little tighter, I did go up a few hook sizes to make sure that my blanket still had some good drape, so if you are using a different yarn, you may also want to go up a hook size. And if you’d like to make this blanket bigger or smaller, all you have to do is adjust your base chain using the pattern repeat below.

Materials

Bernat Maker (75% cotton, 25% nylon, 250 g/8.8 oz, 290 m/317 yd)

6 skeins Cream, 4 skeins Fawn

Size N/P 10mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 55 in x 65 in

Gauge 4 in = 9 stitches and 10 rows of pattern

Stitches

Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Wide Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook in the space between HDC stitches of previous row, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 108 with Cream. (Pattern repeat is 19 multiplied by an odd number, plus 13.)

Row 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain with Cream. CH 2 and turn.

Row 2: Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the first 11 stitches with Cream. On the 11th stitch, stop on the last step of the stitch and pull through with Fawn. (Make sure to bring the Cream yarn to the front of your work before pulling through with Fawn so that it finishes the HDC on the back side of your work.) Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the next 8 stitches, carrying the Cream yarn along the top of your work and crocheting over it as you go. Continue alternating 11 Cream stitches and 8 Fawn stitches across the row, always crocheting over whichever yarn you are not using along the top of your work, and always bringing your yarn to the front of your work each time you switch colors so that it finishes the HDC stitch on the back side of your work. At the end of the row, CH 2 and turn. Wrap the Fawn around the back of your work so you can continue to carry the yarn on the next row.

***From now on, you will always be carrying whichever yarn you are not using across the top of your work as you crochet.***

Row 3: Work 1 Wide HDC in each stitch across the row with Cream. CH 2 and turn.

Row 4: Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the first 11 stitches with Cream. *Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the next 8 stitches with Fawn, then work 1 Wide HDC in each of the next 11 stitches with Cream. Repeat from * to the end of the row. CH 2 and turn.

Rows 5 – 14: Repeat rows 3 – 4.

Row 15: Repeat row 3.

Row 16: Work 1 Wide HDC in each stitch across the row with Fawn. CH 2 and turn.

Row 17: Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the first 12 stitches with Cream. *Work 1 Wide HDC in each of the next 7 stitches with Fawn, work 1 wide HDC in each of the next 12 stitches with Cream. Repeat from * to the end of the row. CH 2 and turn.

Rows 18 – 23: Repeat rows 16 – 17.

Row 24: Repeat row 16.

Row 25: Repeat row 3.

Repeat rows 2 – 25 five more times. Then repeat rows 2 – 15 to end the blanket. (You can stop carrying your yarn on the final row of the blanket.)

Border

Round 1: After finishing the last row, chain 1 and begin working down the side of your blanket and work 1 round of HDC around the entire blanket. Work 4 HDC in each corner.

Round 2: Work 4 HDC around starting corner and continue working in same direction. Work 1 round of Wide HDC around the blanket, working 2 HDCs into each corner space. Slip stitch into starting corner, tie off, and weave in ends.
