Welcome to this big, beautiful world, baby Henry! Henry is our newest great-nephew and one of the most peaceful and beautiful babies I’ve seen. He is two weeks old, and Annie and I were able to visit him and take some photos of him cuddled up in the multi-colored checkerboard blanket I made just for him.
He is just so precious. He was so sleepy as we took so many photos of him. I love seeing their little yawns;—he is so cute!
The pattern for this blanket is the Checkerboard Gingham Pattern that I published last fall. It is one of my very favorite stitches and yarns to use for gifting a baby blanket.
I use the griddle stitch, which is alternating double crochet and single crochet, and on the next row, double crochet are worked into single crochet and single crochet are worked into double crochet. It hides the carried yarn so well and gives the blanket a beautiful texture.
Using Bernat Softee Baby Cotton is also a great yarn to use as it is 3 weight and a cotton blend. This blanket will wash well for years to come. I toss them in the washer and into the dryer and they come out great. I have made baby bibs with Bernat Softee Baby Cotton and stains come right out.
What I also love is that they also sell the same yarn with more adult colors, not just a pastel collection. I used the color Sandstone for the rust and paired it with Feather Gray and Dusk Sky for a modern and on trend design. I don’t know of many lines of yarn that sell the perfect rust color right now.
The only thing different I did for this blanket, opposed to the one color checkerboard blanket, is add a double pair of ribs for the border. Instead of working alternating front post and back post, I alternated two front post with two back post. The corners were worked as “DC, CH 2, DC” so on the next round you work “DC, CH 2, DC” around the previous row CH 2. It made for a nice finished look. (You can see the corner in the photo below.)
