Crochet Lilac Lullaby Baby Blanket

Hello friends, Hannah here! This is my first baby blanket I’ve made with the new Red Heart With Love Better Half yarn and I really love how it turned out!

Red Heart With Love Better Half is a new cotton/acrylic blend from Yarnspirations that comes in 14 beautiful shades, including the lovely shade of Lilac I used for this blanket.

The stitch I used for this blanket is a variation of our favorite Even Moss Stitch, which is a pattern of alternating slip stitch and half double crochet. I switched up the look a little bit for this blanket by adding in some split half double crochet stitches in addition to the regular half double crochet stitches. If you’ve never seen a split half double crochet before be sure to check out the YouTube tutorial for this blanket before you get started!

Since this is a smaller weight yarn and a denser stitch, this blanket was definitely more time consuming than some of our other even moss blankets we’ve done, but it was also a very relaxing stitch. I also decided not to put a border on this blanket because I love how straight the edges looked without one!

We always love when we can find a beautiful picture book to match the blankets we make to give as baby shower gifts and I just love these two darling books! You can find My Little Deer and My Little Lamb on Amazon!

7 skeins Lilac

Size I/5.5mm crochet hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 32 in x 34 in

Gauge 4 in = 13 st and 18 rows of pattern

Stitches

Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook, yarn over (YO), pull up a loop and pull directly through loop on hook.

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Split Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook into the center of the HDC from the previous row, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 112. (Pattern repeat is any even number that is also an even number when divided in half.)

Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SL ST. *Work 1 HDC in the next stitch, then 1 SL ST in the next stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row. (The last stitch should be a SL ST.) CH 1 and turn.

Note: Since you will always be starting and ending each row with a slip stitch, do your best to keep the first and last stitches of the row a little bit looser so it doesn’t get too tricky to insert your hook into the slip stitches at the start and end of each row.

Row 2: Work 1 SL ST into the first stitch. *Work 1 HDC in the next stitch, 1 SL ST into the next stitch, 1 Split HDC in the next stitch, 1 SL ST into the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Note: This first row of working Split HDC is the trickiest for getting your hook into the center of the HDC from the previous row, so just do your best to get your hook into the center of the “V” but don’t stress if it’s not perfect. I promise it gets easier to see where to insert your hook after this row!

Repeat row 2 for the remainder of the blanket, until your blanket measure appx. 34 in or your desired length. Then tie off, weave in your ends and enjoy your beautiful blanket!

Note: I loved how straight the sides of this blanket looked with the slip stitches at the end of each row, so I decided not to add a border, but you can always add one if you like!
