Crochet Merry and Bright Winter Scarves

It’s always exciting for us to try out a new yarn and this new Red Heart With Love Better Half does not disappoint!

This yarn is a new cotton acrylic blend from Yarnspirations that is sooo soft and nice to work with and comes in several beautiful bright colors!

I wanted to make some fun holiday scarves to try out this new yarn and I love how they turned out! This yarn is definitely great for gifts – especially for hats, scarves and sweaters. We can’t wait to try it out with some baby blanket patterns next! You can find all these fun colors on Yarnpsirations.com!

For these scarves I experimented with variation of our favorite Even Moss stitch, which is alternating slip stitch and half double crochet (HDC), but instead of regular HDC I used split HDC, which helped to stack the HDCs on top of each other and make more of a knit look. Using the split HDC can be a little tricky to get a hang of for the first few rows, but once you get going it gets much easier!

Here is a video tutorial for these scarves if you’d like to see how to work the stitch before you get started!

Split Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook into the center of the HDC from the previous row, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 30 (or any even number).

Row 1: Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SL ST. *Work 1 HDC in the next stitch, and 1 SL ST in the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: Work 1 SL ST in the first stitch. *Work 1 split HDC in the next stitch, and 1 SL ST in the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 until your scarf measures about 64 inches or your desired length. For the striped scarf, change colors every 6 rows, alternating white color in between each color. To change colors, insert your hook on the last stitch of the row, then lay new color on hook, pull through stitch and directly through loop on hook. Cut previous color, leaving a long tail. When finished with scarf, tie off and weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
