I love the alternating texture between the griddle stitch and herringbone stitch! I used this idea on a blanket called the Griddle Checked Border Blanket. I originally wanted to make the whole blanket a checkerboard, but the yarn I was using was marled, and it made it hard to see the stitches clearly.

Switching to a solid color yarn was the answer! And now I am so happy it worked out. I also needed to start working on fall scarf projects. I’m already thinking about how to make a matching hat. So stay tuned!

I have to let you know, though, that Caron Simply Me Merino is so luxurious. It is a blend with fine merino wool, so you get luxe results. It’s like working with an upscale yarn without the upscale price. If you wanted to make this as a gift, this is the yarn to use. Materials

Caron Simply Me Merino (100 g/3.5 oz, 197 meters/215 yards, 50% acrylic, 50% merino wool) Tap name of yarn to shop on Yarnspirations.com

2 skeins Caramel (If you want a longer scarf buy 3)

size H 5mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook

Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops on hook

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): YO, insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through first loop on hook, YO and pull through the remaining two loops

Size

8 inches x 54 inches

Gauge: 2 inches = 6 rows and 8 sts (taken from scarf)

Pattern

ROW 1: HHDC into the second chain from the hook and into each of the next 7 chains. DC into next chain, SC into next. Alternate DC and SC across the next 6 chains. *HHDC into each of the next 8 chains. Alternate DC and SC into each of the next 8 chains. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 2: Alternate DC and SC into each of the next 8 SC and DC. (DC are worked into SC, SC worked into DC). HHDC into each of the next 8 sts. Alternate DC and SC into each of the next 8 sts. HHDC into each of the last 8 sts. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 3: HHDC into each of the first 8 sts. Alternate DC and SC into the next 8 sts. HHDC into each of the next 8 sts. Alternate DC and SC into the last 8 sts. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 4 and 5: Repeat rows 2 and 3.

ROW 6: Repeat row 2.

ROW 7: Repeat row 2.

ROW 8: Repeat row 3.

Continue alternating stitches and rows to create the checked pattern. Each stitch block is 8 stitches and 6 rows. I used two skeins in their entirety. If you want a longer scarf, buy 3 skeins.
