Crochet Mixed Loop Twist Headband

Two crochet headband

Thank you so much for stopping by for the pattern to the Crochet Mixed Loop Headband! Since using the alternating “mixed” loop HDC stitch, I’ve been curious to see what it would look like in continuous rounds with no joining or turning.

I can’t think of a better project than a twist headband! These are so easy to make.

Three crochet headbands

Look how pretty that stitch turned out! I just love it.

I first made a hat using this alternating front loop and back loop HDC (US Terms). But that is worked with turning rows so the look is slightly different, still gorgeous. You can see in the photo below:

Making twist headbands is one of my favorite crochet projects to make in the wintertime and give away as gifts. I especially like making them double thick for those in colder climates.

I have shared a pattern with all slip stitches as you can see in the photo below.

These are worked all in back loop slip stitch

And I have also made them with a combination of single crochet and half double crochet.

You essentially are starting with a chain that is joined into a circle. Then you work around and around with no joining or turning until your “tube” is approximately 3 inches less than the head circumference needed.

We will include a size chart that can refer you to the average head circumferences, but for the best result, try and get an accurate measurement of the person’s head. Measure just above the ears and around the forehead.

We have made so many different headbands using this simple twist method, so if you’d like to see other free patterns, make sure you visit our category Hats and Headbands.

I will add, that the even mixed loop headband works up the fastest of all the double thick headbands that we have made. The ones made with all slip stitch are so beautiful, but they do take more than a day to make.

ROUND 1: Join chain with a slip stitch to first chain to form a circle. Work HDC into the same st as join. HDC into each chain around.

ROUND 2: Do not join, do not turn. Begin round by working HDC into front loop, HDC into back loop. Continue alternating front loop and back loop HDC until you have 19 inches in length or length needed.

Tie off with a long tail for sewing.

Sew together following diagram, or watch video below:

Steps to make the twist

Step 1: Lay the band out and fold in half and slide one side of the band across so one end is matched up to the middle of the other.

Step 2: Fold the right-hand side around the back.

Step 3: Fold the left-hand side around the front, giving you four layers

Step 4: Sew with the tapestry needle through all four layers.

Tie the two ends into a knot and then weave in the ends.

Turn the headband inside out and see the beautiful twist.

Watch this one-minute video clip (after a short ad), to see the stitch and twist demonstrated.

Thank you so much for stopping by for this quick and fun crochet pattern! I hope you have lots of success making these twist headbands!
