Look who is turning 4! Our little Kate! How has time just flown? Oh, how this little girl has brought us so much joy and laughter. She’s full of energy and imagination and her smile lights up every room she is in.
Below is a photo of Kate as a newborn, maybe one you have seen floating around on Pinterest and crochet circles. I’m so, so grateful we took the time to photograph her as a newborn. She is pictured below with her Blessing Blanket.

And now she is 4! She has officially entered her princess and mermaid era. She loves Ariel, Elsa, and Moana because they all sing. She loves to watch the music videos of her favorite princesses instead of their movies.
But most of all, she loves to swim and really wants to be a mermaid.
So I had the idea to make her a mermaid tail blanket for her birthday this year. She loved it! When I gave it to her, she said, “Oh, Grandma, this is awesome and so beautiful!”
She was very excited to try it on and kick the tail! But then she reminded me that she really wants one for the pool too. And she really wants to be a mermaid in the pool. Aw, she is so adorable.
Here are a few details about the Mermaid Tail Pattern and yarn that I used.
I found a pattern on Yarnspirations.com that was so easy. I needed to make this fast, so I subbed the 4-weight yarn used in the pattern for Bernat Blanket Yarn. I used a new colorway and style called Bernat Blanket Matte and Shiny.

It has little flecks of shine that I thought would make the tail sparkle. I used 4 balls of Bernat Matte and Shiny. Kate loves pink, so luckily they had a very pretty bright pink shade available. Here is a photo of what the yarn looks like up close:

This is a photo of the Mermaid Tail Snuggle Sack pattern that I used from Yarnspirations. If you tap the photo, it will take you straight to the pattern. It is a free downloadable pattern. I was drawn to it because of the cute ruffles at the top. And because making the tail looked very easy as well.

I only worked one round of the ruffles on top since I was using yarn much larger than the original pattern. If you get to the ruffles and find it hard to understand, you’re basically working double crochet between a set of double crochets, then rotating to work double crochet around the next post of the next double crochet. Just trust the instructions and go with it. After you make a few, you will understand what they are saying. I wish I had time to make a video for you, but I think with a little trial and error you’ll get it.
I also only increased rounds until the sack was about 24 inches across. Using much thicker yarn means you don’t have to do as many increase rounds. You get to a good size much quicker.

Kate has become my sweet little friend. She loves to come over for play dates with me. And I have loved making things for her. Every year I have celebrated her birthday by crocheting her a little something.
Here is Kate at one for Halloween, she was such an adorable ladybug!

I made a pretty little dress for her when she turned two!

And when she turned three I made her another dress:

But I also made her a lot of other items when she was a baby. She is going to have a trunkful of keepsakes! I’ll share just a few more. (Just tap any of the photos if you want more details about the pattern or the pattern itself.)

Happy Birthday Kate! Grandma loves you so very much, and I can’t wait to continue making things for you!
XO, Grandma Gram Gram
P.S. And thank you to all of you who have been following us along even before I had grandchildren, and I was crocheting in hopes of becoming a grandma. It has meant the world to me that you’ve cared and that you love to crochet as much as me! I thank you for sharing in the joy with me.
