Before the summer ends, I wanted to share this darling bucket hat pattern I used all summer to make hats for my grandkids. Baby Jack, who is now 3 and a half, was such a good model for me! For a while there, he wasn’t so into wearing hats, let alone letting me take a picture of him. But now, he was such a good sport! He was on his way to swimming lessons and I quickly dashed over to snap photos before he was off to the pool.
I made this hat for James and Nora too, but never was able to get a photo of them. James is two and in his “no hat” era anyway. I’ll have Hannah work on getting a photo of Nora. Their hats turned out so cute!
After making Jack’s hat, I learned that if you don’t want the leaning look that single crochet in the round can give you, make sure you are “yarning under” instead of “yarning over” when you insert your hook to make the stitch.
I demonstrated this technique in this Reel on Instagram if you want to take a look. It makes a nice little X and it makes the stitch stand up straight. I used it for the border on the squared-off chevron blanket.
It’s very handy to use in this hat, and you will get better results. The pattern is a free downloadable pdf from Yarnspirations. The only modification I did was add striping after all the increases were finished, and I also stopped after the 9th round for the brim. The pattern has a more sun hat brim, and I wanted it to be more bucket.
I used Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in blueberry, mod blue and robin’s egg. I also used white. I just used one of each. Bernat Handicrafter is the same texture of cotton as Lily Sugar n’Cream if you are more familiar with that line.
I love this classic pattern. I have made it before for baby Kate if you want to see what it looks like when you add more rounds after round 9 to make it more of a sun hat.
Good luck with your hat! Thank you for stopping by and sharing in our love of crochet! I love sharing what we are making for our friends and family.
XO, Tiffany
