I loved making this Inverse Hearts Baby Blanket so very much! This is one of those projects that I loved watching grow and grow. It will be a little car seat/stroller blanket for Nora for Valentine’s Day.
If you have made any of our gingham blankets and have learned how to carry yarn, and learned how to keep the carried yarn from twisting, you will not have any problem making this blanket. You’ll want to print the graph that we have linked at the end of this post to follow the initial stitch counts for the heart, but I found after making one section that I rarely had to refer to the graph at all.
I love using Bernat Softee Baby Cotton for any blanket I carry yarn along the rows. It works very nicely and makes a nice blanket to gift. Modern moms seem to really like the natural fibers and matte finish. Bernat Softee Cotton also washes really well.

I used a G, 4.0 mm hook to keep the stitches fairly small and to prevent the carried yarn from showing through. In the YouTube tutorial, I show you a close-up shot in which you can barely see the carried yarn, but some bits will show through, and this is okay.
I kept the border very simple by using the same Crumpled Griddle Stitch that I used for the blanket. Crumpled Griddle is alternating double crochet and single crochet and on the next row, double crochets are worked into double crochets, single crochets into single crochets. (This is opposite the regular Griddle Stitch where doubles work into singles, singles into doubles.)
I hope you have a wonderful time making this blanket! I even used the graph to make Nora a little matching sweater. I can’t wait to see it on her!

Stitches
Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook
Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops
Size
32 x 32 inches
gauge: 2 inches = 9 sts and 8 rows taken from blanket
Pattern
Chain 136 with Cotton (pattern repeat is 27 x the amount of squares plus one for the turning chain. However 27 x the number needs to be an odd number.)
Row 1: Begin in the second chain from the hook with SC. *DC into the next chain. SC into the next chain. Repeat from * across the next 25 chains for a total of 27 sts. On the 27th st, pull through with soft plum. Work alternating DC and SC with plum while crocheting over cotton and bringing it along the row. On the 27th stitch with soft plum, change color to cotton. Continue alternating SC and DC and alternating colors every 27 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
Tip: just before switching colors, give the carried yarn a bit of a tug to make sure it’s laying flat along the row just before pulling through and using it as the new color. Also, to keep yarn from twisting, keep one color to the front of your work and one color to the back. Refer to the YouTube tutorial for a demonstration of this technique.
Row 2: Wrap the color not in use around the end of the row and work the first SC underneath the carried yarn. Begin alternating DC and SC and alternating colors every 27 stitches, carrying the yarn along the row. CH 1 and turn.
Row 3 and on: Continue using the crumple griddle stitch for the pattern and change colors according to the graph.
Tip: each “block” is 27 stitches, when you work each section, it’s helpful to know the number of stitches on each side of the heart and how many for the heart. Those numbers always equal 27.
Row 3: 13, 1, 13
Row 4: 12, 3, 12
Row 5: 11, 5, 11
Row 6: 10, 7, 10
Row 7: 9, 9, 9
Row 8: 8, 11, 8
Row 9: 7, 13, 7
Row 10: 6, 15, 6
Row 11: 5, 17, 5
Row 12: 4, 19, 4
Row 13 through 18: 3, 21, 3
Row 19: 4, 9, 1, 9, 4
Row 20: 5, 7, 3, 7, 5
Row 21: 6, 5, 5, 5, 6
Row 22-23: 27
The blanket is 5 hearts wide and 4 hearts high.
Border:
Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner. CH 1 and work SC in same space. Work 3 sts (DC, SC DC) at the end of one row, skip one row work (SC, DC, SC) into next row. Work (SC, CH 2, SC) into each corner. Work 2 sts in griddle pattern into one stitch across top or bottom, skip one stitch, work next 2 sts in griddle pattern. (Always alternate for griddle pattern.) Join with a slip stitch to first SC, CH 1 and turn.
Round 2: Work (SC, CH 2, SC) around each corner CH 2’s, work SC into SC and DC into DC around. Join with a SL ST to starting st. CH 1 and turn.
Continue repeating round 2 for desired width of border.
