Crochet Even Mixed Loop Hat with Fun Fringe

Yarnspirations has a new line of yarn out called Bernat Fluffee! I had to give it a try right away so I made a sample of our Even Mixed Loop Hat, and added a bit of fun fringe on the top just for kicks. It turned out so great! I really love how soft it is. It is going to be perfect for hats, mittens, scarves and even throws.

From the Yarnspirations website:

Introducing the latest member of the Bernat family, Bernat Fluffee. This fluffy yarn is the ultimate fusion of comfort and style, perfect for both home décor and fashion projects.

Whether you’re designing cozy blankets, stylish scarves, or chic throw pillows, Bernat Fluffee will have you on cloud nine with a fashionable color palette and super soft texture.

  • Lots of texture, but does not lose stitch definition
  • Extremely soft, ‘Fluffee’ texture that’s designed to prevent shedding
  • Great for home décor and fashion projects thanks to its light feel
  • No splitting between stitches improving the consumer experience
  • Great value for the yardage
  • Content: 90% polyester, 10% nylon
  • Ball Size: 280 g/9.8 oz, 380 meters/415 yards
  • Care: Machine wash and dry
  • Gauge: #5 Bulky

I can honestly say and agree with the above description, I had no problem with the yarn splitting, I think the stitch definition is excellent and there is a ton of yarn in one skein. As you can see in my photo, there is still a lot left to make a pair of mittens and possibly another hat.

This yarn is reminding me of Bernat Forever Fleece Finer, which is no longer available. Fluffee is maybe a tad thicker, but not as thick as regular Forever Fleece. I made the Crochet Mesh and Ribbed Throw with Bernat Forever Fleece Finer and I think Bernat Fluffee would make a great substitute yarn.

To make this hat any size, follow the size chart to make your starting chain the length you need. This hat is made as a rectangle, sewn together and gathered at the top. The fun fringe is made as you are making the hat.

Materials

Bernat Fluffee (tap name of yarn to shop Yarnspirations.com)

Size L/11 8.0 mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Stitches

Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert hook, YO, pull back through and through loop on hook.

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert hook, YO, pull loop through, YO, pull through all loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 32 for the child size height 10 inches. (or chain to the length you need in the chart)

ROW 1: SL ST into the second chain from the hook and into each of the next 4 chains. HDC into each remaining chain. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 2: HDC into the first st. Back Loop HDC into each of the next 7 sts. (mark the 8th st) *Work 1 Front Loop HDC into the next st, 1 Back Loop HDC into the next st. Repeat from * in each HDC. Work Back Loop SL ST into each of the remaining 5 sts. CH 10 and turn.

TIP: To adjust for other sizes, make sure the alternating HDC, (middle portion of the hat) is an even number.

ROW 3: Back Loop SL ST into each of 9 chains, back loop SL ST the first 5 SL STs. *Work 1 Front Loop HDC into the next st, 1 Back Loop HDC into the next st. Repeat from * to the marked st. Back Loop HDC into each of the remaining sts. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you have 3 inches less than the head circumference needed for size.

Last row will be at the brim end. Tie off with a long tail to use for sewing. Fold hat matching starting chain row with final row. Work tapestry needle by going under loops of HDC and loops of starting chain. When you reach the top, work the needle into the very top loops of the slip stitches. Continue working the needle around the top of the hat several times to cinch it in. Weave in the ends. Fold up the brim.

When adjusting to other sizes, the brim is 4 inches and there are an even number of stitches between the brim and the 5 slip stitches. For smaller than 6 months, adjust the slip stitches to 3 and the brim to 3 inches.
