Summertime Stripes Crochet Blanket

summertime stripes blanket on ladder

I think this blanket would be perfect for a summertime baby! I love how these bold colors worked so well together. Also, I really like how this blanket could be for a boy or a girl.

That’s a bonus when you need a baby shower gift and you don’t know what the baby is going to be.

I used the herringbone half double crochet for the main part of the blanket, and I separated the colors with one row of half double crochet clusters worked across two stitches.

The border is one row of double crochet with one row of the half double crochet clusters followed by one row of single crochet.

I’m going to rate this blanket intermediate because of the clusters and how tricky the counting is on those rows. If you are really good at identifying the tops of stitches, then you shouldn’t have a problem, but I just want to warn beginners that it’s not as easy as the blanket looks.

What I suggest is that you sub out the clusters for one row of herringbone half double crochet.

I was able to record a video for you, so if you work a practice swatch, you can decide if it’s an appropriate project for your skill level.

I never like to dissuade anyone from trying anything! So see what you think.

Pattern

Highly recommend a SC foundation chain. (It’s demonstrated in the video linked above.)

With white, chain 120.

ROW 1: If using the foundation chain, CH 1 and work 1 HHDC into the first stitch from the hook, if using a chain, work 1 HHDC into the third chain from the hook. 1 HHDC into each chain across. CH 1 and turn. (120 stitches for foundation chain, 118 for regular chain.)

ROWS 2 – 10: 1 HHDC into each stitch across the row, CH 1 and turn.

ROW 11: Work 1 HDC into the first stitch from the row below. *Work HDC-CL into each stitch across by yarning over and inserting your hook into the stitch you just worked with a HDC, then yarning over and pulling a loop back through, then yarn over again, insert your hook into the next unworked stitch, yarn over and pull a loop back through, yarn over and pull through all loops left on the hook. Repeat across the row from *. Before finishing the last step of the last stitch, pull through with the color Persimmon. CH 1 and turn.

(If you are unsure that you worked the right amount of clusters, take the time to count. You should have 120 for a foundation start, 118 for a chain start.)

ROWS 12 – 21: (10 rows) repeat the instructions for rows 2-10 with Persimmon.

ROW 22: Work one row of half double crochet clusters as explained above.

Continue the rest of the blanket as rows 12-22 using the color changes in this order: Persimmon, Sunshine, Light Country Blue, and White. Each cluster row is made with White. Repeat the colors again and end with 10 rows of White. Do not tie off, but do weave in all the ends before continuing with the border.

Border

After weaving in all the ends, CH 1 and turn. Work 1 DC into each stitch, 3 DC into each corner, and work 1 DC per row down the sides of the blanket. Join with a slip stitch at the end of the round to the starting DC. CH 1 and turn.

Work 1 HDC into the first stitch. Work HDC cluster across two stitches around the entire blanket. Slip stitch to join with the beginning HDC. CH 1 and turn.

SC into each HDC cluster stitch, work 3 SC into each corner HDC-Cluster, join with a slip stitch at the end of the round, tie off and weave in the end.
