Crochet Cotton Terry Striped Washcloths

We have been so excited to finally have a chance to try out this new Cotton Terry yarn from Yarnspirations!

A few months ago we had a little sneak peek of this yarn and we’ve been waiting to finally get our hands on it and try out some projects!

Bernat Cotton Terry is a #4 worsted weight, cotton/acrylic/nylon blend that comes in lots of beautiful shades and can be used for a variety of projects. It’s much easier to use than other boucle yarns we’ve tried and I love how it worked up for these washcloths!

You can find the new Bernat Cotton Terry yarn on Yarnspirations.com or Amazon!

Since this was my first time using this yarn I wanted to keep this pattern really simple, so I used the Crumpled Griddle Stitch, which is just alternating stitches of single crochet and double crochet. I also switched colors every two rows so I could carry the yarn up the side of my work and not have too many ends to weave in.

Even though this yarn is more textured, it’s still very soft, and I love the feel of these washcloths! Here’s a quick video tutorial for this pattern if you’d like to watch before you get started!

Pattern

Chain 26 with Cotton color (White).

Row 1: Work 1 SC in the 2nd chain from the hook. *Work 1 DC in the next chain and 1 SC in the next chain. Repeat from * across the row. Your last stitch should be a SC. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: Work 1 SC in the first stitch. *Work 1 DC in the next stitch and 1 SC in the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. On the last stitch, pull through with new color before finishing the stitch, but don’t cut the White yarn. CH 1 with new color and turn.

Rows 3 – 4: Repeat row 2 with new color. On the last stitch of row 4, pull up the White so it lays flat against the side of your work and pull through with White before finishing the stitch. Don’t cut the color yarn. CH 1 and turn.

Continue repeating row 2 until you have 6 white stripes and 5 color stripes, alternating colors every 2 rows and carrying the yarn up the side of your work each time you switch colors.

Border

After working your last row, pull through with the color yarn on the last stitch and CH 4.

Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work HDSS in each of the 3 chains back toward the edge of the washcloth. *Slip stitch into the first space on the side of the washcloth, and in the next space. Turn and work HDSS in the back loops of each of the 3 HDSS you just made. CH 1 and turn. Work back down the HDSS in the back loops only. (Be careful not to miss the 3rd stitch, it sometimes pulls tight and is hard to see.) Repeat from across * each side.

Corners: When you reach a corner space, only slip stitch once, before turning and *working HDSS back up to the top of the border. Return and slip stitch once into the corner space. Repeat from * two more times, then resume slip stitching into each of the next two stitches and working across the side.

(If your corner isn’t looking rounded enough, you can slip stitch an additional time into the corner and work up and down an extra time with HDSS, or if it is causing the border to ripple, you can slip stitch into the corner only two times instead of three.)

When you reach the starting corner, work the corner the same way as previous corners. Stop when you get to the top of the border and tie off, then use a tapestry needle to sew corners together. Weave in the rest of your ends and enjoy your washcloth!
