Crochet Mid-Modern Throw

pink and white crochet blanket hanging over couch

My daughter Nicolina is decorating her new house in an eclectic mid-century modern vibe and I really wanted to make her a throw.

We brainstormed together on ideas. At first, I was hoping to turn the Inverse Squares Throw into an Inverse Circles blanket.

Here’s a photo of the Inverse Squares:

But the swatches really didn’t turn out looking all that different from the squares and it wasn’t quite what she was wanting.

So she sent me a sketch of a solid circle with an open square. I graphed that out on StitchFiddle.com and got to work.

My first try was with the herringbone half double crochet, but I did not like seeing a straight line of carried yarn through the rows.

So I took that out and switched back to the griddle stitch, (which is the same stitch I used in the Inverse Squares Throw), and I liked the speckled look of carried yarn much, much better.

I can see so many other possibilities with this design! I would love to make it again with each row of shapes a different primary color. That could be so fun for a little kid’s playroom.

I kept the border very simple by using the same stitch as in the blanket. I wanted the entire blanket to look the same. I hope you have so much fun making this!

Pattern

Print the graph. Odd numbered rows are read right to left. Even numbered rows are read left to right.

Chain 121 (pattern repeat is any odd number times 24 plus 1.)

Row 1: With White, begin looking at the graph in the bottom right-hand corner marked (1). In the second chain from the hook *work 1 SC. DC into the next chain. Repeat from * across the row. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: Begin looking at the graph marked (2) on the bottom left-hand corner. In the first stitch, *work 1 SC , DC into the next st. Repeat from * across the row.

Going forward, all stitches are alternating SC and DC, and always ch 1 and turn. I will just be denoting the color changes. If you just want to look at the graph, repeat the graph one and a half times, ending on stitch #24. This also means that on the even rows the graph will start at stitch 24 reading it left to right.
