Crochet Gingham Christmas Stocking

crochet gingham Christmas stocking in black and white

I am so excited to share this crochet gingham Christmas stocking!  But before I get to the pattern, I want to emphasize the importance of knowing how to carry yarn through your work. Please, if you have not seen this technique, I’d love if you would do a sample swatch to practice, because when you are increasing and decreasing for this pattern, you need to understand how to carry yarn around the end of your work, and you need to know how to change colors at the end of a stitch.

Here is a video clip demonstrating how to change colors within a row, and turn the work. Again, it’s a great idea to practice this before starting this stocking.

More tips before you start

I wrote this pattern out assuming that you will know, that on the last stitch, you will always be pulling through with a new color. So when you see in the pattern, for example, SC 4 in white, SC 5 in gray, it means single crochet in the next 4 stitches in white, but stop before you pull through all the way to finish the stitch, pull through with the new color, then proceed with the next 5 stitches. Also, assume that when I say SC 5 in whatever color, it means one stitch per stitch. When I say SC 3 times, it means work 3 SC into the same stitch.

In order for your work to look like gingham, (if you are choosing to do this in different colors) you need a white, medium and dark color yarn. The medium and dark colors are shades of the same color and the medium color will always alternate with either the white or the dark.

In the case of red buffalo plaid, the red acts like the white, a burgundy would be your medium and black would be your dark. It’s very important that you practice this in a swatch to get your colors just right.

I’m highly suggesting you do your first sample with Caron Simply Soft yarn because it is easy to block, stretch and pull into the shape you need. (When you get going on this you will know what I am talking about.)

So let’s get to it!

Materials

Caron Simply Soft in heathered charcoal, heathered grey, and white, (one skein of each) All available on Yarnspirations.com

I used a size “I”, 5.25 mm hook from Boye

Finished size is approximately 16 inches high by 8 inches wide.

Pattern

Make 2.

Chain 17 in white

ROW 1: In the second chain from the hook, SC in the next 4 chains in white, pulling through with gray on the 4th SC, SC in the next 5 chains in gray, working over the white strand, (carry this along through the work, not behind) pulling through with gray on the last stitch, SC in the next 5 chains in white, pulling through with gray on the last stitch, SC once in the next chain in gray, SC 3 times into the last chain space with gray, CH 1, turn.

(going forward, I am no longer going to say, “in the next SC.” Just know that is what you do. When you need to work multiple SC into the same stitch, I say “times.” As in “SC 2 times.” You are making blocks that are 5 stitches wide by 5 rows high. Always keep that in mind so you know exactly when to pull up a new color. I also am no longer going to tell you to pull through on the last stitch with the new color or carry the yarn through the work. Please refer to the video to watch how I carry the yarn not in use around the side of the work when it is time to chain one and turn. Please pay close attention to this last stitch and make sure it is the first stitch you work back into when you turn.)

Tie off, sew in all ends, and pat yourself on the back! YOU DID IT! Now go make one more.

I used a blanket stitch to sew the two sides together. If you do not know how to do that stitch here is a great tutorial that I used, click here: Blanket Stitch

What I did a bit differently with the blanket stitch however, is I did not knot the ends and I left a tail to weave in and I used a double strand of yarn, (use two strands).

After stitching the two sides together, choose one of the sides to pull up a white strand of yarn using your “I” hook. SC into each SC around the top, SL ST when you get back to the starting SC, CH 1 and turn, SC around in the opposite direction. Continue slip stitching at the end of each round, chaining one and turning and SC around the top of your stocking for 20 rows, or to your preference.

If you like the look of the blanket stitch, roll down your cuff and you are finished! Or, I preferred turning the stocking inside out, I finger pressed the edges, then rolled the cuff down. (That is pictured, but it’s totally up to you!)

Make sure you attach a loop of chains for hanging!

DONE!

Best of luck with your crochet gingham Christmas stocking!  Now, I have done my best, writing this out, and I’ve gone back through and followed how it’s written two times, and I hope I’ve caught typos, but please if you see anything that needs fixing, send me an email to daisyfarmcrafts@gmail.com. I’d appreciate it!

Enjoy! And Merry Christmas! (Come and show me your gingham Christmas stocking on Instagram! Don’t have an account? Start a crochet account and get in on all the sharing that is happening! It’s so fun! Or you can post a picture to my Facebook page. I’d just love to see how your stocking turns out!)
