I finally finished this giant blanket! When I started this throw before Christmas I quickly discovered what a hand work out it is, so I only worked a few rows at a time in between other projects, but I ended it up giving it away as a house warming gift to a friend who just bought their first home and I love how it turned out!
The yarn I used for this throw is called Bernat Blanket Extra Thick and even though it took a bit of practice to get used to using such a giant hook, I think it was worth it for such a soft and cozy throw!
3 skeins of Bernat Blanket Extra Thick yarn* in Vintage White (100% polyester, 600 g/21.2 oz, 66 m/72 yds)
25mm crochet hook
Finished Size 44in x 36in, gauge 4in = 3 st, 2 rows
Back Loop Half Double Crochet: Yarn over (YO), insert your hook into back loop only, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 3 loops on hook.
Back Loop Half Double Slip Stitch: YO, insert your hook into back loop only, YO and pull up a loop and pull directly through 2 loops on hook.
ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work a Half Double Crochet (HDC) into each chain. Chain 2 and turn.
ROW 2: (turning chain does not count as stitch) Inserting your hook into back loops only, work Half Double Slip Stitch (HDSS) into each stitch across the row. Chain 2 and turn.
ROW 3: Inserting your hook into back loops only, work HDC into each stitch across the row. Chain 2 and turn.
Repeat rows 2 through 3 for fifteen more rows, or until blanket measures appx. 36 inches. (blanket is worked lengthwise, so base chain should measure appx. 44 in)
When switching to a new skein of yarn, I found that it worked best to knot my ends together and leave tails long enough that I could weave into the blanket with my hands.
