This is an easy blanket to crochet if you are a beginner. Annie used the wide half double crochet stitch to create this look. Wide half double crochet means that you are working half double crochet in between each half double crochet stitch of the previous row. It makes this beautiful, solid-looking fabric.
Also notice the color changes how they start light to dark and then back to light. You can use any colors that you’d like for the stripes, but as a design tip, keep this same idea- find two shades of the same color and pair them with two shades of a different color and then place them light to dark and then dark to light.
The colors reminded us of summer, they are so bright and cheery, but we can easily see this for any time of the year.
She used Bernat Bundle Up, which is so soft and cozy, it feels like a flannel blanket when you are finished with the blanket.
The colors used were Marshmallow, Posy, Red Wagon, Brook, and Green Mist.
She also kept the border very simple by using a round of half double crochet followed by a round of double crochet then a round of front and back post double crochet to give a little ribbed look. You can do more rounds of the ribbing as well.
Let’s get to the pattern! Be sure and scroll to the end of the post for the free printable version. Also, there are linked video tutorials for the wide half double crochet stitch.

ROW 1: Begin in the third chain from the hook and work HDC. HDC into each chain across the row. CH 2 and turn.
ROW 2: Begin in the first space between the first and second HDC with WHDC. WHDC into each space between each stitch across the row. Work last WHDC in between the last st and the turning chain. CH 2 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 instructions for the rest of the blanket making the color changes as follows:
10 rows Marshmallow, 2 rows each of Green Mist, Brook, Red Wagon, Posy.
End the last 10 rows of the blanket with Marshmallow.
Tie off and weave in all the ends before beginning the border.
Border
ROUND 1: With Marshmallow, pull up a loop in top left hand corner, chain 2 and HDC into the same space. HDC across the sides of the blanket working 1 HDC per the end of each row. [HDC, CH 2, HDC] in each corner. HDC in between each stitch across the bottom and top of blanket. In starting corner, work HDC, CH 2, and join with a slip stitch to starting HDC. CH 2 and do not turn.
(Tip: if after working HDC at the end of each row and the blanket is pulling, either go up a hook size, or add a HDC every 5 stitches. If the HDC’s are rippling, you may have too many stitches. You want to work the HDC as evenly as possible along the sides.)
ROUND 2: Work 1 DC into each HDC around, work [DC, CH 2, DC] around each corner ch 2 space. Join to the first DC of the round with a slip stitch, CH 2 and do not turn.
ROUND 3: Work FPDC around the next DC, and then BPDC around the next DC. Alternate working FPDC and BPDC around each DC. Work [DC, CH 2, DC] around each corner ch 2 space. Join to the first DC of the round with a SL ST, Tie off.
