Crochet Christmas Stripes Hot Pad/Pot Holder

When Christmas is only a few weeks away, and you need last-minute gifts, crochet a Christmas Stripe Hot Pad! We are adding these to go along with a cute set of spatulas and cookie sheets. A little touch of homemade is perfect for the holidays.

Don’t be afraid of weaving all the ends, either, with so many color changes. These hot pads are double thick, and the ends are hidden in the middle. This makes it faster to finish them and get them ready to gift.

The dot border is also a nice touch around the edge of the hot pads. If you need assistance with how that stitch works, we have shown how to make that border in the candy cane stripe video tutorial. Otherwise, it is all explained in the written pattern below.

Materials

Lily Sugar N’Cream  (100% cotton, Ball Size – Solids: 71g / 2.5 oz, 109 meters / 120 yards)

1 ball each color, white, red, dark pine

H-5mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

8×8 inch squares

Gauge: 2 inches = 6 HHDC and 5 rows (taken from project)

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull a loop back through. Yarn over and pull through final two loops on the hook. 

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull a loop back through and continue pulling through first loop on the hook. Yarn over and pull through final two loops on hook.

Dot: *Yarn over and insert hook into first chain, yarn over and pull a loop back through. Repeat from * 3 more times. Yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Pattern

With Color (red or green) chain 25. (Make 2)

ROW 1: Begin in the second chain from the hook with one HHDC. HHDC into each chain across the row.  CH 1 and turn. (24)

ROW 2: HHDC into each st across the row. On the last step of the last stitch of the row, pull through with white. CH 1 and turn. Cut color. 

ROW 3 and 4: HHDC into each st across the row. On the last step of the last stitch of the row, pull through with color. CH 1 and turn. 

Repeat alternating colors every 2 rows for 18 rows total. Always cut color after joining new color. 

Joining the two squares together: 

Place squares together and tuck all the ends into the middle of the hot pad. (Tie two ends together for extra security)

Round 1: In any corner, pull up a loop and ch 1. SC into same space. Work 3 SC at the end of every other row, 3 SC into each corner, SC into each stitch across the top and bottom. Do not turn.

Round 2: SL ST into the first SC of the round. **Chain 2. In the first chain, *yarn over and insert your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. Repeat from * 3 more times. Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook.  Slip stitch into the stitch just below the chain 2 to secure the puff. Slip stitch into each of the next 4 sts. 

Repeat from ** around. Join with a slip stitch to the first st, tie off and weave in all ends.
