Hello friends! This picture is of Annie, my youngest daughter, holding a darling blanket she made for her friend’s baby shower. She was so excited to be able to crochet a blanket for her. 

And I am so proud that at 23, Annie has learned and continued to progress in her crochet skills. She continues to enjoy crochet and learn the basic stitches and enjoy them. 

Now, I did have to help finish the border for her as she was running out of time and the baby shower was this last Saturday. This is probably one of our most popular borders that we use on blankets. It is really easy to do and finishes the blanket off so nicely. 

I did tweak the stitches in the corner in order to simplify them. So if you are using an older blanket pattern that has this border, you might notice a difference in how the corners are made. 

Annie used Bernat Bundle Up yarn and loved it. She reported back to me that everyone at the baby shower loved the softness and feel of the blanket. We cannot recommend it highly enough for gift giving. Bundle Up is like working with a soft matte flannel. 

I wish they offered more colors, but of the colors they have, they are modern and in line with what young moms are using these days.

Annie used the Crumpled Griddle Stitch for the main body of the blanket. It is very beginner friendly and a fun one to use. The texture is beautiful and helps to even out beginner tension. 

After working her practice swatch, she realized that she chains too loosely for the starting chain. To fix it, she used a smaller hook for the base chain and first row, then switched to a larger hook. She started with an H-5mm hook and then went up to an I- 5.5mm hook. I’m so glad she worked a practice swatch first before starting the blanket. 

She also worked out how wide she wanted her stripes in the practice swatch and decided the border, all before beginning the blanket. I highly recommend making a practice swatch for any of our blankets, (we always give the pattern repeat for this reason.) You can find out so many things that might go wrong and fix them before starting in on the real blanket. I think this is one reason why her blanket turned out so well.

Materials

Bernat Bundle Up (100% polyester, Ball Size: 140 g/4.9 oz, 244 m/267 yds, 4 weight)

1 skein each Sky Blue, Cloud White, Misty Gray

2 skeins Beluga (border color)

size I 5.5mm hook, scissors, tapestry needle

gauge: 2 inches = 7 sts and 6 rows of pattern

size: approximately 34 x 34 inches

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook

Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops

Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC): YO, insert your hook around post from front to back and back to the front popping the post forward, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops.

Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC): YO, insert your hook around post from back to front and front to back, popping the post away from you to the back, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops.

Pattern

With Cloud White, Chain 110 or any even number to the length you desire.

ROW 1: Starting in the 2nd chain from hook, *work 1 SC. In the next stitch, work 1 DC. Repeat from * across the row. The last stitch made will be a SC. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 2: Starting in the first stitch, *SC into the top of the SC of the previous row. DC into the next DC. Repeat from * across the row working the final SC into the last SC. (Always DC into DC. Always SC into SC.) CH 1 and turn.

ROW 3: Repeat row 2 instructions for the rest of the blanket, changing colors every 6 rows.

Color sequence: Cloud White, Misty Gray, Sky Blue, Beluga. 

Tie off and weave in all ends before beginning the border. 

Border

ROUND 1: With Beluga, pull up a loop in any stitch on the top of the blanket. CH 1. Work SC into that stitch and each st to the first corner. Work 3 SC into the corner. On the sides of the blanket, work 1 SC at the end of each row and see tip below:

Tip: Measure the height of one stripe, (6 rows) then count how many stitches of width equal the height. If the width equals 6 sts, work 1 SC per the end of each row, If it equals 7 sts, work 1 extra SC every 6 sts. This will help you to have an even border along the sides. 

Work 1 SC per st across the bottom of the blanket, 3 SC into each corner, join with a SL ST to the starting SC, CH 3 and turn. 

ROUND 2: Work 1 DC into each SC around, work [DC, CH 1, DC] into the center SC of each corner. Join with a SL ST to starting CH 3, CH 3, do not turn. 

ROUND 3 through 5: Work alternating FPDC and BPDC around each DC. In each corner CH 1 space, work [DC, CH 1, DC]. Join each round with a SL ST to the CH 3, CH 3 and continue.  On last round, SL ST to ch 3, CH 1 and turn. 

ROUND 6: Work 1 SC into each st, work 3 SC into each corner ch 1 space. Join with a SL ST, tie off and weave in the ends.
