If you can believe it, this blanket starts with 2 chains. That’s it, starting chain 2. So super nice when you’re just not in the mood to count out a long starting chain.
It is worked from one corner to the other and most refer to this as C2C (Corner to Corner.) Usually, C2C is made with a series of double crochets, but I’ve substituted the stitch for one of my favorite stitch patterns called the “Mesh Stitch.”
The color scheme and idea came as I made a bookmark for my dear friend Naz, who just debuted with his very first YA novel, THE LOOPHOLE. *
And then I just decided that Naz needed more than a bookmark from me to celebrate his book! He has a darling little doggy that I think will enjoy this blanket.
I have been Naz’s writing critique partner for the past 5 years and had the privilege to read this book when it was just a rough draft.
Just in case you are in a Barnes and Noble or on Amazon* and pick up a copy, head to the acknowledgments in the back of the book and I’m in there! Naz is the kindest human being you will ever meet and I’m so happy for his success.

And then the title “Loophole,” I think for sure needs to be celebrated with crochet, because what else is it but loops and holes!

Pattern
Begin with the color Blush.
Chain 2.
Row 1: In the second chain from the hook, work “SC, CH 1, SC.” CH 1 and turn.
Row 2: Beginning in the first SC, work “SC, CH 1, SC.” CH 1, skip next chain, SC into the last SC. CH 1 and turn.
Row 3: Beginning in the first SC, work “SC, CH 1, SC.” *CH 1, skip next chain, SC into next SC, repeat from across, ending with SC in last SC, CH 1 and turn.
Repeat row 3 to increase, changing colors every 8 rows. Order of colors: Blush, Sandstone, Golden, Jade Frost, Aqua Mist, Dusk Sky, Pale Periwinkle, Soft Plum.
Tip: after working the first 8 rows in Blush, add a stitch marker anywhere along the side of the blanket, (also this will be the side where the yarn tails will be) this helps to identify the side of the blanket that will grow to be the longer side of the rectangle.
On the 14th color change (the second time to use Dusk Sky) work only 4 rows in Dusk Sky following ROW 3 instructions.
Row 5: Beginning in the first SC, work “SC, CH 1, SC.” *CH 1, skip next chain, SC into SC, repeat from * across until there are 1 chain and 1 SC left. Omit making last CH 1, skip chain 1, SC into final SC, CH 1 and turn.
Row 6: Beginning the 2nd SC, work 1 SC. *CH 1, skip next chain, SC into SC, repeat from * across ending with 1 SC into final SC.
Row 7: Repeat row 5
Row 8: Repeat row 6.
Change colors 3 more times.
Work 4 rows of next color then start decreasing on both sides.
Row 5 of first decrease: Beginning in the first SC, work 1 SC, *CH 1, skip next chain, SC into next SC. Repeat from * across until there are 1 chain and 1 SC left. Omit chain 1, SC into final SC. CH 1 and turn.
Row 6 of decrease: Beginning in the 2nd SC, work 1 SC. *CH 1, skip next chain, SC into SC, repeat from * across until the final ch 1 and SC. Omit chain 1, SC into final SC, CH 1 and turn.
Row 7 and 8 of decrease: Repeat row 6.
Continue changing colors every 8 rows and continue the rows of decrease.
When there are 4 stitches left, work SC into the second SC from the hook, skip the ch 1, SC into last SC. CH 1 and turn.
SC into final SC. Tie off.
Weave in all ends before starting the border.
Border
Pull up a loop in any corner, CH 1 and SC into same st. CH 1 and SC at the end of each row. Join with a slip stitch to first SC of the round, CH 1 and turn. Work SC into each SC and CH 1 across each CH 1. Join with a slip stitch, Tie off and weave in the end.
