Hi there! Nicolina here with a simple beginner-friendly baby blanket in super soft velvet. I love making these for my friend’s new babies and even though velvet has given me a struggle in the past, I think I finally kept my tension just tight enough so the loops don’t slip free.
I’m using the wide half double crochet stitch which my mom highly recommends when you are working with velvet.
We have a post here on the site called How To Successfully Crochet with Velvet that gives more tips about working with velvet. I read through before I got started that really helped me.
Materials
Bernat Velvet Yarn (100% Polyester / 300g / 10.5 oz, 288 meters / 315 yards)
Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn (100% Polyester / 300 g/10.5 oz, 450 m/492 yds
3 skeins of Misty Gray, 1 skein of White, 1 skein of Orchid Hush (Bernat Baby Velvet)
Size I/5.5 mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors
Size
Finished size 37 in x 40 in
Gauge 2 in = 7 sts and 6 rows of WHDC
Stitches
Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops.
Wide Half Double Crochet (WHDC): YO, insert your hook in between stitch posts, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
Pattern
Chain 120 in Misty Gray (or any number).
ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC into each chain with Misty Gray. CH 2 and turn.
ROW 2: Work 1 WHDC into each space across the row. CH 2 and turn.
Repeat row 2 for the remainder of the blanket.
To change colors: On your last stitch in the row, insert your hook into the stitch, YO and pull through stitch. There should be two loops on your hook. This is where you lay the new color over your hook and pull through both loops to finish the stitch with your new color. Make sure to leave at least a 6 to 9-inch tail when you cut the previous color.
Here’s how I did my color changes: 32 rows of misty gray, 2 rows of white, 12 rows of orchid hush, 2 rows of white, 32 rows of misty gray, 2 rows of white, 12 rows of orchid hush, 2 rows of white, 32 rows of misty gray
Border
Weave in all ends with your tapestry needle before beginning the border.
Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner, CH 1 and work 2 HDC into the same space. Work 2 HDC into every other stitch and at the end every other row on the sides of the blanket. In the corners work “2 HDC, CH 1, 2 HDC”. After working last corner, join with a slip stitch to first HDC, chain 2 and turn.
Rounds 2 through 4: Work 2 HDC in between each set of HDC in the row below. In the corners work “2 HDC, CH 1, 2 HDC around the chain 1 space of the previous row. Join with a slip stitch to the first HDC of the round, chain 2 and turn.
Thanks so much for coming to read this pattern, I hope you enjoy making this blanket! When you finish please come share a picture with us on Facebook or Instagram with #daisyfarmcrafts, we’d love to see! —Nicolina
