I’ve made a second version of the velvet twist headband that is even easier than the first and works up faster.
I love using the wide half double crochet, formerly called by us as HDC in between the posts, with velvet. You work under all the loops the HDC makes and to the left of the post and in between the next post, and wow, that is just such a complicated way to describe the one place you poke the hook! So have a look at the graph below:
This stitch seems to lock down the velvet and keep it from popping loops. Velvet is very slippery to work with, so go down a hook size if you need to keep your stitches tighter than usual.
I also highly recommend working up a swatch to try out the yarn to get a feel for it.
The velvet headbands have been a huge hit with my girls and my nieces.
I have a video tutorial if you’d prefer to make from video instead of reading the pattern. Keep scrolling past the video for the written pattern.
Materials
Bernat Baby Velvet (100% polyester, 300 g/10.5 oz, 450 m/492 yds)
1 skein any color
Size H/5.00mm hook, scissors, tapestry needle
Size
Finished size 5 in x 19.5 in long (or to the length you need to fit snuggly around your head. Can be made in any size – see head size chart below. Make length of headband 3 inches less than head circumference.)
Stitches
Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops.
Wide Half Double Crochet (WHDC): YO, insert your hook between stitch posts, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops.
Pattern
Chain 20. (Chain 16 for children under the age of 5. My niece is 6 and she is wearing the 5 inch wide headband, just made it 18 inches long.)
ROW 1: In the third chain from the hook, work 1 HDC. Work 1 HDC into each of the remaining chains. Chain 2 and turn. (18)
ROW 2: In the first space to the left of the post, and under all three loops the HDC makes, work HDC. Work HDC into each space between each post across the row, your last HDC will be worked in between the post and the turning chain. Chain 2 and turn.
Repeat row 2 until your headband measures 19.5 inches for an average woman’s size head or to the size you need.
For the twist:
Step 1: Lay the band out and fold in half and slide one side of the band across so one end is matched up to the middle of the other.
Step 2: Fold the right hand side around the back.
Step 3: Fold the left hand side around the front, giving you four layers
Step 4: Sew with the tapestry needle through all four layers.
Thanks for coming by and good luck on your Velvet Twist Headband!
