Hi there! I’m in love with another blanket! I am also still in love with Red Heart With Love Better Half. Look at these colors! Perfect for a little baby boy. (I was going for a golf theme as well.)

This yarn is the perfect 50/50 blend of acrylic and cotton. Cotton gives it the matte finish, acrlyic adds in the softeness. It is a really nice yarn to crochet with. This is my second blanket using this yarn and I’ve also made a hat. (At the very end of the post I’ll link you to those patterns.)

If you’re feeling scared to make this blanket, I encourage you to try it by watching the video tutorial and making a small swatch. This gives you time to practice carrying yarn through the rows. It will help you get the hang of it before starting the big blanket.

Most of the time, after people have made this blanket, they message and comment, “Hey, that wasn’t as hard as I thought!” And they are right! Also, watching the blanket grow is the best part. You just can’t believe how amazing it looks and that it is crochet.

Materials

Red Heart With Love Better Half (100 g/3.5 oz, 159 meters/174 yards, 4 weight, 50%cotton, 50% acrylic)

3 skeins Ivy, 3 skeins Indigo

Size

30 x 30 inches

Gauge: 1.5 inches = 6 HHDC and 4 rows.

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert hook, yarn over and pull a loop back through, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through first loop on hook, YO and pull through remaining two loops.

Pattern

Chain 116 with Indigo (Pattern repeat is any odd number x 5 plus 1)

Row 1: HHDC in the 2nd chain from the hook. HHDC in each of the next 4 chains, joining Ivy on the 5th HHDC. (5 HHDC made in Indigo). HHDC with Ivy in each of the next 5 chains, crocheting over the Indigo tail and bringing it along with you, laying it flat against the chain, pull through with Indigo on the 5th HHDC. Alternate across the row, switching between Indigo and Ivy every 5 chains.

Tip: (Always pull through on the last step of the 5th stitch of each color change, crochet over whichever color you aren’t using, and carry it along the row.) Chain 1 and turn. (Your last color block should be Indigo.)

Rows 2 – 4: Bringing the Ivy around the end of the row, continue crocheting over the tail and HHDC in each of the next 5 stitches with Indigo, then pull through with Ivy. Alternate the colors every 5 stitches as in row 1. Always chain 1 and turn.

Rows 5 – 8: At the end of row 4, pull through with Ivy, wrap Indigo around the end of the row. HHDC in each of the first 5 stitches, carrying Indigo along the row. HHDC with Indigo into each of the next 5 stitches, working over the Ivy. Continue the row alternating every 5 stitches and laying the yarn not being used across the row and working over it. Chain 1 and turn.

For the rest of the blanket, continue alternating colors every 4 rows until you have 23 blocks in length. When you have the length, your last row should end with Indigo as the last 5 stitches. Cut Ivy and continue working with Indigo to start the first round of the border.

Border

Round 1: Ch 1 and turn. Work one SC into each stitch across the top of the blanket. Work 3 SC into each corner. On each side, *skip one row, work 3 HHDC into the end of the next row. Repeat from * for each side. Work 1 SC per stitch across the bottom of blanket. Join with a slip st to first stitch of the round. Do not turn.

Round 2: Work 1 HHDC into each stitch and 3 HHDC into each corner st. Join with a slip stitch to the first st of the round. Tie off and weave in the ends.
