I’ve made another blanket using the new Red Heart Cotton Breeze. It’s a wonderful cotton blend yarn that is lightweight (3 weight) and so nice to crochet with.

All the colors are speckled with white, so you get a nice marled finish. For this blanket, I experimented with adding a bit of texture with the griddle stitch, paired with herringbone half double crochet stitch. The pattern is very simple to memorize and once you get going, you’ll look forward to building the next square of the border. It’s a blanket I enjoyed watching grow.

Initially, I planned to make it a design with a built-in border so that when the last row was complete, the blanket was complete. But it just needed a couple of extra rounds of herringbone to look finished. I couldn’t leave it as-is. 

I hope you enjoy the pattern though; it’s a good quick one to memorize and work on while you listen to other things! That’s my favorite kind to make. Materials

Cotton Breeze (tap name of yarn to shop on Yarnspirations.com)

155 g/5.5 oz, 440 meters/481 yards size 3

3 balls- Sea (or any color

Size 5 mm H hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on hook

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC): YO, insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through first loop on hook, YO and pull through remaining two loops

Size

Approximately 32 x 32 inches 

Gauge: 4 inches = 14 rows and 16 stitches

Pattern

Chain 121. (To make a different size, 8 x any odd number plus one)

ROW 1: HHDC into the second chain from the hook and into each of the next 7 chains. DC into next chain, SC into next. Alternate DC and SC across the next 6 chains. *HHDC into each of the next 8 chains. Alternate DC and SC into each of the next 8 chains. Repeat from * across the row. Work HHDC into the final 8 chains. CH 1 and turn. 

ROWS 2-8: *HHDC into each of the next 8 HHDC, alternate DC and SC into each of the next 8 SC and DC. (DC are worked into SC, SC worked into DC). Repeat from *across the row. CH 1 and turn. 

ROWS 9-17: *Alternate DC and SC across the next 8 sts. HHDC across the row until 8 stitches remain. Alternate DC and then SC in the final 8 sts. CH 1 and turn. 

ROWS 18-26: HHDC into each st across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 9 through 26 until you have 96 rows. 

Repeat ROWS 2-8 instructions for the final 8 rows of the blanket. 

Tie off and weave in the ends. 

BORDER

Pull up a loop in any corner. CH 1.

Round 1: Work 2 HHDC into a st, skip one st across the top and bottom of the blanket. 3 HHDC into each corner. *2 HHDC at the end of a row, skip a row, 3 HHDC at the end of the next row. Repeat from * for the sides of the blanket. Join with a SL ST to the first HHDC of the round. Do not turn. 

Round 2: work HHDC into each stitch, 3 HHDC into the middle st of each corner. Join with a SL ST to the first st, tie off and weave in the ends.
