Easy Chunky Crochet Velvet Blanket

pink velvet blanket

Hello crochet friends, Hannah here, I found this Baby Bee Adore-a-Ball yarn at Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago and as soon as I felt it I wanted to try it :). It’s super soft like the Bernat Velvet yarn we’ve used before, but it’s a little bit thicker. I think the best way to describe it is that it’s a mix between Bernat Velvet and Bernat Blanket yarn.

When I first bought this yarn I thought I could get away with trying out some different stitches than we’ve used in our other velvet blankets, but I just couldn’t find anything that would help keep the yarn from slipping out, so I just decided to stick to our tried and true wide half double crochet with a front and back post double crochet ribbing for the border. Sometimes you have to just do what’s best for the yarn!

The other thing I noticed with this yarn was that it tended to work up better when I used my Clover crochet hook over my other hooks. I usually don’t recommend hooks because I don’t think it makes that big of a difference, but if you find that this yarn is hard to pull through, maybe try switching to a different brand hook.

The last tip I have for using this yarn is the same with any other brand of velvet yarn – be sure to keep your tension tight! If you start and find that you keep getting loops coming loose, I would recommend trying going down a hook size.

Materials

Yarn Bee Adore-A-Ball (100% polyester, 3.5 oz/92 yds)

8 skeins Pink-A-Boo

Size 8.00mm or 9.00mm crochet hook (I used a 9.00mm, but you may want to go down a hook size depending on your tension.)

Tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 30 in x 36 in

Stitches

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through three loops.

Wide Half Double Crochet (WHDC): YO, insert your hook between stitch posts, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on hook.

Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through two loops, YO, pull through remaining two loops.

Front and Back Post Double Crochet (FPDC & BPDC): A front post double crochet means you insert your hook from front to back around the post of the next DC and work a DC. A back post double crochet means you insert your hook from back to front around the post of the next DC and work a DC.

Pattern

Chain 60 (or any number).

ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain. CH 2 and turn.

ROW 2: (turning chain does not count as stitch) Work 1 WHDC in each space across the row. CH 2 and turn.

Repeat row 2 for the remainder of the blanket until you reach your desired length. (I worked 73 rows.)

Border

Weave in any ends with a tapestry needle.

ROUND 1: Pull up a loop in any corner and chain 3. DC around the entire blanket, working 3 DCs into each corner stitch.

ROUND 2: When you reach the corner you started with, work 3 DCs into the corner, then go around the blanket again, this time alternating front and back post double crochet. When you get to the corners of this row, you will want to continue the pattern of alternating front and back post double crochet, but you will work three stitches around the corner post.

So, for example, if you get to the corner post and you are supposed to work a front post DC, then work a front post DC, a back post DC, and a front post DC all around that corner post.  Then in the next stitch you would continue the alternating pattern, working the opposite of whichever stitch you just used (in this example, you would work a back post DC). Just remember that you are always alternating front and back post double crochet around the whole blanket, you just happen to be working three of those stitches around the same post when you are working the corners.

ROUNDS 3 – 4: When you finish row 2, work 3 alternating front post/back post DCs into the corner you started with and repeat row 2 two more times around the blanket, until you have four rows total. (Or you can go around as many times as you’d like to get your desired border height. I only had enough yarn to go around 4 times.)

Here’s a video for the border!
