Crochet Velvet Windowpane Throw

velvet crochet textured windowpane throw in progress

Hello, Hannah here…I’m so excited to give this throw to my husband’s youngest sister who is graduating from high school in a few weeks! I thought a soft velvet blanket would be a good gift to keep her cozy while she’s away at college!

I made this blanket with Bernat Velvet yarn*, which is super soft and snuggly. If this is your first time working with this yarn, here are some tips that may help:

-Pull the yarn from the outside of the skein instead of the middle – you’re much less likely to get your yarn tangled that way.

-Keep your tension tight – since this yarn is more slippery, having a tighter tension will help prevent stitches from coming loose. If you start this blanket and it seems like your stitches are not staying secure, you may want to try going down a hook size.

-When switching to a new skein, try to bring in the new yarn at the end of the row instead of the middle and knot the two ends together before you weave them into the blanket.

If you are wanting to use a more washable or baby-friendly yarn, I think this pattern will also work up great in any 4 or 5 weight yarn!

Pattern

ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain. Chain (CH) 2 and turn.

ROW 2: *Work 1 WHDC into each of the first 15 spaces, then work puff stitch, WHDC, puff stitch, WHDC, puff stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row. CH 2 and turn.

ROW 3: Work 1 WHDC into each space across the row. CH 2 and turn.

ROW 16: Repeat row 2 (puff row)

ROW 17: Repeat row 3

ROW 20: Repeat row 18.

ROW 21: Repeat row 3.

ROW 22: Repeat row 18.

ROW 23: Repeat row 3.

Repeat rows 2 through 23 five more times, or until your blanket reaches your desired length.

Border

Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner and chain 2. Work one round of DC around the blanket. Work DC, CH 1, DC into each corner space.

Round 2: When you reach the corner you started with, work DC, CH 1 DC around the starting chain 2, then continue working in the same direction and work alternating front and back post DC around each DC. Work DC, CH 1, DC in the ch 1 spaces of the corners. (Make sure and work the DC of the row below that makes the corner in the FP or BP that keeps the sequence alternating correctly.)

Rounds 3 – 4: Continue working in the same direction and repeat round 2. Always match your post double crochets so that they are poking out in the same direction as the previous row. When you finish the last round of your border, slip stitch into the starting corner and tie off.
