Inspired by the name Wildflower, I wanted to design a blanket that captured the charm of a flower-filled meadow. After experimenting with a few swatches, I found that combining the moss stitch with puff stitches created a sweet tulip-like effect!

I added an extra row of color behind the tulip rows in order to keep things even so I could carry my yarn up the side of my work and not have to weave in so many ends, but also because I think it kind of gives the illusion that they are bunches of flowers in a meadow.

Here is a video tutorial for this pattern if you’d like to watch before you get started!

Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining two loops on hook.

Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through loop on hook.

Pattern

Chain 120 (or any even number) with White color. (To avoid a sagging chain, insert your hook under top 2 loops of chain.)

Row 1: Starting in the 4th chain from the hook, work SC, CH 1. Skip the next chain then work another SC, CH 1. Continue working SC, CH 1 in every other chain. You should end with one SC in the last chain. CH 2 and turn.

Rows 2 – 4: Work SC, CH 1 into the chain one space of the row below (in the space underneath the 4th chain from the hook). Skip the next stitch, then work SC, CH 1 in the next chain one space. Continue working SC, CH 1 into the all the chain one spaces from the row below. End with a SC that is between the last stitch and the turning chain of the row below. On the last stitch of row 4, pull through with Green color before finishing the last SC. Don’t cut the White yarn. CH 2 with Green and turn.

Rows 5 – 6: Repeat row 2 (moss stitch) with Green color. On the stitch of row 6, pull through with Pink color. Do not cut the Green.

Row 7: With Pink, work one row of moss stitch, but replace every other SC with a puff stitch. You should end the row with a SC. CH 2 and turn.

Row 8: With Pink, work 1 row of moss stitch. On the last stitch of the row, carry White up the side of your work and pull through to finish the last SC. CH 2 with White and turn. Cut the pink yarn and leave a long tail you can weave in later.

Rows 9 – 12: Work 4 rows of moss stitch with White.

Repeat rows 5 through 12 for the remainder of the blanket, always carrying the White and Green colors up the side of your work and changing the color of rows 7 and 8 each time. Here is the color pattern I used for each of the tulip sections: Coral Clay, Golden, Dusk Sky, Dusty Rose, Sandstone, New Blue, Deep Rose. I worked the color sequence 2 times total and then ended the blanket with 4 rows of moss stitch with White.

Border

Round 1: After working your last 4 rows of moss stitch with White, CH 1 and turn to begin working down the side of your blanket. Work 1 SC per row on the sides of the blanket, and work the moss stitch on each end of the blanket. Work 3 SCs in each corner. (Be sure to crochet over yarn that was carried up the side of your blanket.)

Round 2: Slip stitch into starting corner and CH 1. *Work 1 SC in the first stitch, then skip 1 stitch and work 5 DC into the next stitch, skip the next stitch. Repeat from * down the side of the blanket. Continue pattern around the corner. On the first end of the blanket, continue alternating SC and 5 DC, but instead of skipping stitches, insert your hook into the CH 1 stitches as if you were working the moss stitch. Work the next side and other end of the blanket in the same manner as previous side and end. At starting corner, slip stitch into starting stitch and tie off. (You may need to skip an extra stitch at the end of the round to finish the corner.)

Tie off and weave in ends.

If you’d like to add finishing touches to your blanket, lay it out flat on a towel or foam blocking boards if you have them. Use a spray bottle with water to dampen the blanket. Press the blanket into straight lines, massaging the stitches and adjusting your tension. Pin with straight pins and let it dry.
