first square
With Tangerine, chain 25.
ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC into each chain. CH 2 and turn. (23 stitches)
ROW 2: Work WHDC (insert your hook in between the posts) into each of the first 11 spaces with Tangerine. On the 11th stitch, pull through with White before you finish the stitch (when you have 3 loops on your hook), and work WHDC with White and carry the Tangerine along the top of your work and crochet over it as you work your stitch. Before you finish the White stitch, pull through with Tangerine. Wrap the White around the front of your work, and leave it (don’t cut or carry it). Then work WHDC into each of the remaining spaces with Tangerine, making sure your last stitch is in between the last stitch of the previous row and the turning chain. (You should have 23 stitches total.) CH 2 and turn.
ROW 3: Work WHDC into each of the first 10 spaces with Tangerine. On the 10th stitch, pull through with White (pull it up from behind your work where you left it on the previous row). Work WHDC with White in each of the next 2 spaces and carry the Tangerine along the top of your work and crochet over it as you work your stitch. On the 2nd White stitch, pull through with Tangerine. Wrap the White around to the front of your work, then leave it, and work WHDC with Tangerine into each of the remaining spaces. CH 2 and turn.
For the remaining rows, I am just going to write out the color counts for each row – you should always carry the Tangerine along the top of your work and crochet over it whenever you are working White stitches and you should always leave the White yarn whenever you finish working all the White stitches for that row.
ROW 4: Work WHDC into each of the first 10 spaces with Tangerine, work WHDC into each of the next 3 spaces with White, work WHDC into each of the remaining spaces with Tangerine. CH 2 and turn.

second square
With Tangerine, chain 25.
ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work a HDC into each chain. CH 2 and turn. (23 stitches)
ROWS 2 – 22: Work WHDC into each space across the row. CH 2 and turn. At the end of row 22, tie off and weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
combining squares
Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle. Place the square with the heart on top of the plain square so that they line up evenly. With the heart side facing toward you, insert your hook through both squares and pull up a loop in any corner and chain 2. Work a HDC into each space around the edge of the squares, and work 3 HDC into each corner. When you reached the corner you started with, slip stitch into the starting chain 2 and tie off.
