Crochet Raised Berries Baby Blanket

Crochet Raised Berries Baby Blanket on ladder

Hello crochet friends! Hannah here.  For the past few months I’ve been wanting to experiment with different stitches to create some alternating textures and my mom suggested that I try using Bernat Blanket yarn.  I’d never used it before this blanket and I wasn’t sure at first if I was going to like it, but I love how soft and squishy it turned out!

I worked up several different practice swatches with different stitches before I finally decided that I liked having the berry cluster stitches stand out against the flat half double crochets. Overall this blanket uses five different stitches – check out our stitches page if you’d like to see video demonstrations for any of them!

Berry Stitch: YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through one loop, YO, insert your hook into same space, YO and pull up a loop, YO, pull through all five loops.

Pattern

Chain 65 (or any odd number).

Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain. Chain 1 and turn. (Normally, when we use HDC we start in the third chain from the hook and chain 2 at the end of the row, but with bigger yarn I like to only chain 1.)

Rows 2 – 5: Work 1 WHDC in each space across the row. Be sure not to miss the last space between the last stitch and turning chain. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 6: Work 1 slip stitch into the first space, then work 1 berry stitch into the next space (continue inserting your hook in between the stitch posts). Continue alternating a slip stitch with a berry stitch until you reach the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 7: Work 1 SC into the top of every stitch across the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 8: Repeat row 6

Row 9: Repeat row 7

Row 10: Repeat row 6

Row 11: Work 1 HDC into each stitch across the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Rows 12 – 15: Work 1 WHDC in each space across the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 6 – 15 until blanket measures appx. 41 in inches or your desired length.

When you finish the blanket, weave in any ends with a tapestry needle. Because the stitches switch back and forth throughout the blanket, the sides of my blanket turned out a little wavy, so I worked a simple single crochet border around the edges to make them straight. To add the border, pull up a loop in any corner and chain one, then single crochet around each side of the blanket, working 3 SCs into each corner.  When you reach the corner you started with, slip stitch into the starting stitch and tie off.
