Crochet Hudson’s College Throw – A Perfect Project for Beginners

I love to make blankets for my nieces and nephews to take to college and luckily, I can use my younger sister Natalee’s hands to make it happen! She loves to crochet and helped me get this present done. This is her son Hudson’s College Throw, which is based on a scarf pattern that Haley made when she went off to college.

Here is a photo of Haley wearing the scarf that we adapted into a blanket.

And here is Hudson, sharing a picture his college roommate took of him with his new college throw:

It turned out so great! It’s perfect for his apartment and just a handmade touch for him when he is far away from home.

My sister Natalee and I decided he needed this blanket to be extra warm, so we doubled up the Caron Simply Soft yarn. She crocheted with two strands at a time. This made the blanket work up faster and also made it a chunky, heavier-weight blanket. Hudson loved it!

This blanket is very beginner-friendly and uses a stitch called the wide half double crochet. This stitch is wonderful to learn and gives you straight sides every time. The magic lies in the fact that you always work the last stitch just before the turning chain. You are never hunting for a little V to work into; every stitch is worked in between the stitches.

Watch the short video clip above to learn the stitch. The entire blanket is made with this stitch. Once you do a practice swatch you will be ready to tackle this blanket.

There will be ends to weave in on the sides, and since this is a beginner-friendly blanket, we left the border off.

ROW 1: In the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 Half Double Crochet (HDC). HDC in each chain space across the row.

ROW 2: Chain 2 and turn. In the first space just to the left of the post and underneath all three loops, work 1 wide half double crochet (WHDC.) WHDC into each space across the row, the last WHDC will be worked between the last post and the turning chain.

ROWS 3 – TO THE END: As row 2.

Pull through with new colors in this order:

18 Rows White, *9 Blue, 5 Grey, 9 Blue, 2 White, 2 Grey, 2 White, 2 Grey, 2 White, 2 Grey, 2 White, 2 Grey, 2 White, 9 Blue, 5 Grey, 9 Blue. Repeat from * two times then end with 18 rows of White.

Tip: to change color, on the last step of the HDC stitch, lay new color over your hook and pull through. Then, CH 2 and turn with the new color. Cut old color with an 8 inch tail to weave in later.

Finish by using a tapestry needle to weave tails into and through the stitches. For the best finish, weave one strand at a time.

That’s it! You’ll love this collegiate-looking blanket. I hope you can make one in the team colors of your choice and come and share it with us in the Daisy Farm Crafters Group on Facebook, or share your blanket on Instagram and tag us @daisyfarmcrafts.
