Crochet Field of Daisies Sun Hat

My darling little grandbaby Kate loves her sun hat! It turned out so cute, and I can’t wait for her to wear it at the beach this summer and match cousin Nora with the purple version.

The flower square is a free pattern from Yarnspirations.com that I have used in several projects now because it is so fun to make and turns out so very cute. I keep experimenting with different yarns. This time, I’m using 4-weight Caron All Day Cotton. I think it will hold shape a bit better than the Bernat Softee Baby Cotton I have used in the past.

I sized down on the hook to a G-4mm to have tighter tension to give the hat more stability and stiffness to help hold its shape.

I made a YouTube tutorial to help you construct this hat. It starts with making 4 Field of Daisies squares, then making a circle, attaching the squares, sewing the squares together, and then making the brim portion.

If you look closely at the top of each hat, you’ll see that the seam at the top is pronounced on the white one, and on the purple one, the seam is on the inside of the hat. I explain in the video how to choose which way you’d prefer. The pattern is written for the purple version, where the seam is on the inside of the hat.

When making a square, the right side is considered the one you see while making the stitches or the one facing you. That will be important when you attach the squares to the hat and decide whether you want the seam to show or not. Please watch the video, though, to understand fully.

Pattern

Make 4 Field of Daisies Squares, weave in all ends.

Make a magic circle/ring.

Round 1: Chain 1. Work 10 HDC around the loop. Join with a SL ST to the first st. CH 1. Do not turn now and for the rest of the rounds. (10)

Round 2: Work 2 HDC into each st around. Join with a SL ST to the first st. CH 1. (20)

Round 3: Into same stitch as the join, work *1 HDC, 2 HDC into next st. Repeat from * around. Join with SL ST to the first st. CH 1. (30)

Round 4: Into same stitch as the join, work *1 HDC, 1 HDC into next st, 2 HDC into the next st. Repeat from * around. Join with SL ST to the first st. CH 1. (40)

Round 5: Into same stitch as the join, work *1 HDC, 1 HDC into each of the next 2 sts, 2 HDC into the next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a SL ST to the first st. CH 1 (50)

Round 6: Into same stitch as the join, work *1 HDC, 1 HDC into each of the next 3 sts, 2 HDC into the next st. Repeat from * around. Join with SL ST to the first st. CH 1 (60)

Attaching the squares:

Place squares with wrong sides facing. Insert hook under same stitch as join and under corner ch 1 space of square. Work SC. Insert hook under next st of circle and next TC on square. Work SC. Continue attaching the square with SC. Each square, counting the chain 1 spaces equals 15 stitches. 4 squares x 15 = 60 stitches. Continue attaching each square.

On last square, join with a zig zag slip stitch join to first square, tie off. Join all other sides of squares using zig zag sl stitch join, don’t tie off the last join, we will begin the brim.

Turn hat with right sides facing, weave in all the ends.

Brim:

Row 1: With right side facing you, work *2 HDC into st, 1 HDC into next st. Repeat from * around. Include the chain 1 spaces, and joins on the squares as stitches. Join with a SL ST to first HDC of the round. CH 1, do not turn. (approx 95 to 97 sts)

Row 2: Work 1 HDC into each stitch around. Join with a SL ST to the first HDC of the round. CH 1, do not turn.

Row 3: Into same stitch as join, work *2 HDC, 1 HDC into each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. Join with a SL ST to the first HDC of the round. CH 1. Do not turn.

Row 4: As row 2.

Row 5: Skip first stitch of the round, work 5 DC into next st, *skip 1 st, SL ST to the next st, skip 1 st, 5 DC into next st. Repeat from * around. Join with a SL ST to the first st. Tie off. Weave in all the ends.
