Crochet Classic Shell Stitch Dishcloth

I created this dishcloth to showcase the beauty of the new colors we included in our Wildflower Collection (unfortunately, now sold out), and many of you messaged me requesting an official pattern. This post will include the written pattern, a video tutorial for the classic shell stitch, and a free printable PDF. (We always include a printable at the end of each of our posts.)

I hope that, given how quickly this collection sold out, these colors might be put back into production. However, there are still many lovely colors available in the Bernat Softee Cotton and Bernat Softee Baby Cotton lines of yarn that you can use for this dishcloth.

We have not had a problem using this yarn for hot pads or dishcloths, as it’s a 60/40 blend of cotton. If you want 100% cotton, I recommend looking at the Caron All Day Cotton line of yarn. There are many beautiful colors to choose from.

What you will need, if you choose to make this blanket size, is more of the “Cotton” color, which is the name of the cream used every other row. Yarnspirations.com is the first place to look for this yarn now that Joann’s is closed, but Amazon is a second option to consider.

You want to make sure you are shopping from the Bernat Store on Amazon. They sell Bernat Softee Cotton in three packs. Ensure that it reads ‘Cotton’ on the label. They also have a brand called Bernat Softee, and it is 100% Acrylic.

Many of you thought this would make a cute blanket, and I think you are right! It would be so pretty, but there will be a lot of ends to weave in. If you don’t mind, I’d say do it!

Pattern

Chain 44 with the first color. (If you’d like to make a different size, chain any number x 6, then add 2.)

Color sequence: Coral Clay, Dusty Rose, Sandstone, Golden, Moss Green, New Blue, Dusk Sky, Soft Plum, Deep Rose, Taupe, Feather Gray (each color has a row of Cotton (cream) in between)

ROW 1: With first color, starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 1 SC. *Skip two chains, work 5 DC into the next chain space. Skip two chains, 1 SC into the next chain. Repeat from * across the row ending with 1 SC into the final chain. Pull through on last step of stitch with Cotton (cream). CH 3 and turn. Cut yarn, leave tail to weave in later.

ROW 2: Starting in the first stitch (the SC from the previous row), work 2 DC. *Skip 2 DC, work 1 SC in the next DC. Skip the next 2 DC, 5 DC in next SC stitch. Repeat from * across the row, ending with 3 DC in the final stitch. Pull through with next color,  CH 1 and turn. Cut yarn, leave tail to weave in later.

ROW 3: Starting in the first stitch (the DC from the previous row), work 1 SC. *Skip 2 DC, work 5 DC into the SC, skip 2 DC, work 1 SC into the DC. Repeat from * across ending with 1 SC into the top of the turning chain, pull through with cream on last step of the stitch, CH 3 and turn. Cut yarn, leave tail to weave in later.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 for the remainder of dishcloth until all 11 colors are used. End with the final color, the border is worked with Cotton (cream).

Weave in all those ends. (tip: if doing a larger blanket, use two skeins of the Cotton color so you can switch between the two and not cut off the cream each row, just carry the cream up the sides of the blanket, one skein on each side of the blanket. You will still be cutting each color of yarn.)

Border

Round 1:

Top Side: With Cotton (cream), pull up a loop in the upper right hand corner single crochet, CH 1 and SC into same st. SC into each DC and work HDC into the SC across the top of the dishcloth. (Working an HDC helps to fill in the wave of the shell stitch.)

Corners: Work 3 SC into the corner.

Sides: Work 2 SC per sides that end with DC or CH 3’s, work 1 SC per sides that end with SC.

Bottom: work 2 SC around the skipped ch 2’s, 1 SC into the bottom of the shell where 5 DC’s were worked.

Join with a sl st to the first SC, CH 1 and turn.

Round 2:

Work SC into each SC around, work 3 SC into each corner SC. Join with a SL ST to the first SC, Ch 1 and turn.

Round 3: As round 2.
