Crochet Modern Stripe Beginner Throw

beginner modern stripe throw

Hello—Nicolina here with a pattern for a throw!

I really wanted a nice thick blanket with closer, tighter stitches and a braided look. I found our winter hat pattern that uses the HDC-SLST-BLO (half double crochet slip stitch back loop only) and tried it out with Patons Alpaca and it was perfect. It almost looks like a knit blanket.

Here’s a quick video of the stitch if you’d like to see how it’s done before you get started!

Materials

Patons Alpaca Blend (100g/3.5oz, 142 m/155 yds)

9 skeins Lagoon, 9 skeins Birch

Size J/6.00mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 42 in x 56 in

Stitches

Half Double Slip Stitch (HDSS): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through loops on hook.

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 200 in Lagoon. (If you’d like to make your blanket bigger or smaller, chain any number.)

ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain. CH 1 and turn.

ROW 2: (turning chain does not count as stitch) Work 1 HDSS into the back loop only of each stitch across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat row 2 for the remainder of the blanket. CH 1 and turn.

Here’s how to change colors: On your last stitch of the row, YO and insert your hook into the back loop only, YO and pull through the loop. Then instead of pulling the first loop through the remaining two loops, just pull it through the first one and then pull in your new color through the remaining two loops. Chain 1 and turn.

Note: You can choose to chain 2 after every row if you wish. I wanted the blanket to have a tighter, more knit look so I only chained one.

Here’s how I did my color changes: 14 rows of Lagoon, 14 rows of Birch, 3 rows of Lagoon, 3 rows of Birch, 3 rows of Lagoon, 3 rows of Birch, 91 rows of Lagoon (about 6 1/2 skeins), 91 rows of Birch (about 6 1/2 skeins), 3 rows of Lagoon, 3 rows of Birch, 3 rows of Lagoon, 3 rows of Birch, 14 rows of Lagoon, 14 rows of Birch.

Weave in all ends and attach tassels.

Tassels: I chose to add a tassel in each corner to keep with the modern vibe of this throw. I followed this tutorial from BHooked.

Make sure to securely weave the tassel into each corner so it stays attached. I went back and forth a few times into the stitches on either side of the blanket.

Thanks so much for coming to read this pattern, I hope you enjoy making this blanket! When you finish please come share a picture with us on Facebook or Instagram with #daisyfarmcrafts, we’d love to see! —Nicolina
