Crochet Fleecy Ribbons Blanket

fleecy ribbons blanket on ladder

Hello! Hannah here, with an easy chunky blanket that works up fast! I started this blanket over a month ago, but as far as actual time I’ve actually worked on it, it really only took me a few days to make.

This blanket is made with the new Bernat Forever Fleece yarn from Yarnspirations*, which is super soft and cozy and a great choice if you need to quickly whip up a blanket for a baby shower gift!

I had a lot of leftover colors from the other blankets I’ve made with this yarn so far so I decided to make a multicolor blanket and I love how these shades all blend together. This blanket uses a combination of the mesh stitch and the even moss stitch, which are some great stitches to start with if you are a beginner crocheter.

Materials

Bernat Forever Fleece (100% polyester, 280 g/9.9 oz, 177 m/194 yds)

4 skeins Balsam, 1 skein each Patchouli, Rose Hip, Sage, Dark Eucalyptus

Size M/N/9.00mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 34 in x 44 in

Gauge 4 in = 6 st and 10 rows of pattern

Stitches

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, yarn over (YO) and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook.

Half Double Crochet (HDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Slip Stitch (SL ST): Insert your hook, YO, pull up a loop and pull directly through loop on hook.

Pattern

Chain 76 (or any even number) with Balsam.

Row 1: Work 1 SC into the 2nd chain from the hook. *CH 1, skip 1 chain, SC into the next chain. Repeat from * across to the end of the chain (mesh stitch). The last stitch should be a SC. CH 1 and turn.

Row 2: Work 1 SC into the first SC. *CH 1, skip 1 chain, SC into the next SC. Repeat from * across the row. On the last stitch, pull through with White. CH 1 and turn. You can either leave the Balsam and carry it up the side of your work when you return to that side or cut and leave a long tail to weave in later.

Row 3: With White, work 1 SC into the first SC. *CH 1, skip 1 chain, SC into the next SC. Repeat from * across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Row 4: Work 1 SL ST into the first stitch, *1 HDC into the next stitch, then 1 SL ST into the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row (even moss stitch). At the last stitch, pull through with Balsam when you have two loops on your hook (essentially working a SC). CH 1 and turn. Cut the White and leave a long tail to weave in later.

Rows 5 – 8: With Balsam, work 1 SC into the first stitch. *CH 1, skip 1 chain, SC into the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 1 and turn.

Repeat rows 3 – 8, substituting a new color for White each time. I repeated my colors in this order for a total of three times: White Noise, Patchouli, Rose Hip, Sage, Dark Eucalyptus. Then I ended the blanket with White Noise and two rows of mesh stitch with Balsam to match the beginning of the blanket. Essentially for the main part of the blanket you are working 4 rows of mesh stitch with Balsam, then 1 row of mesh stitch and 1 row of the even moss stitch with a new color.

Border

Weave in all ends with a tapestry needle.

Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner and CH 1. Work 1 round of SC around the blanket, working 3 SCs into each corner. On the sides, try to work 1 SC per row. When you reach the corner you started with, work your last SC, then slip stitch into the starting stitch.

Round 2: Continuing on in the same direction, chain 5. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work a SC in each of the 4 chains back toward the edge of the blanket. Slip stitch into the next stitch, and in the next stitch. Turn and work in the back loops of each of the 4 SC you just made. CH 1 and turn. Work back down and SC in the back loops only. (Be careful not to miss the 4th stitch, it sometimes pulls tight and is hard to see.) Continue repeating around the blanket.

When you reach the corners, only slip stitch once, before turning and working the SC back up to the edge. Return and slip stitch into the corner space. Turn and work the SC back up to the edge. When you return to the corner space, slip stitch again into the same corner space, then work the SC up to the edge. In other words, you are working up and down for the border two times in a row, with your slip stitches anchored into the same corner space. After finishing the corner, continue working around the blanket as before.

When you reach the corner you started with, slip stitch into the corner and tie off, leaving yourself a long tail, then use the tail to sew the sides of the corners together with a tapestry needle.

Notes

For this blanket border I worked one round of SC before starting the blanket, which did make my blanket a tad wavy, but the blanket evened out just fine after I blocked it, probably because this yarn is so stretchy. If you end up making this blanket with a different yarn and think your border is turning out too wavy, you can try working mesh stitch around the blanket instead of all SC before starting the back loop SC ribbing.
