Cozy Cuddles Baby Blanket

crochet textured blanket folded

Hello friends, Hannah here, with a new simple textured baby blanket pattern! This blanket is a mix between our Sweet Berries Baby Blanket pattern and our Cluster Stitch Infinity Scarf pattern – the look is very similar but I mixed up the stitches a bit for this blanket.

I recently gifted this blanket to one of my good friends here in Colorado who is expecting her second baby boy a few weeks after my own baby boy is due! She also went through several years of infertility before her first baby was born and I feel so lucky to have had her as a friend while my husband and I were going through infertility treatments this past year. And I am so excited for our little babies to be friends!

I made this blanket with Bernat Bundle Up yarn, which made the texture extra soft and squishy – perfect for some cozy cuddles :).

Materials

Bernat Bundle Up (100% polyester, 140 g/4.9 oz, 244 m/267 yds)

4 skeins Dove

Size I/5.5mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Size

Finished size 28 in x 31 in

Gauge 4 in = 18 st and 15 rows of pattern

Stitches

Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through three loops on hook.

Single Crochet (SC): Insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops on hook.

Extended Double Crochet (EXDC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through one loop on hook, YO and pull through two loops on hook, YO and pull through remaining two loops on hook.

Double Crochet (DC): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through two loops, YO and pull through remaining two loops.

Front and Back Post Double Crochet (FPDC & BPDC): A front post double crochet means you insert your hook from front to back around the post of the next DC and work a DC. A back post double crochet means you insert your hook from back to front around the post of the next DC and work a DC.

Pattern

Chain 110 (or any even number).

Row 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC in each chain. CH 2 and turn.

Row 2: Turning chain does not count as stitch. Work 1 HDC in the front two loops of each stitch across the row. CH 2 and turn.

Row 3: *Work 1 EXDC in the front two loops of the next stitch, then 1 SC in the front two loops of the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 2 and turn.

Row 4: *Work 1 HDC in the front loop of the next stitch, then 1 HDC in the front two loops of the next stitch. Repeat from * across the row. CH 2 and turn.

Note: If you find it is too tricky or time consuming to insert your hook in the front two loops of the EXDC stitches, then you can just insert your hook into the front loop only all the way across this row and the pattern will look almost exactly the same.

Rows 5 – 6: Work 1 HDC in the front two loops of each stitch across the row. CH 2 and turn.

Repeat rows 3 – 6 until the blanket measures approximately 30 inches or your desired length. Weave in ends.

Border

Round 1: Pull up a loop in any corner and chain 3. Work one round of DC around the blanket, working one DC per row on the sides and one DC per stitch on the ends. Work 5 DCs into each corner.

Round 2: When you reach the corner you started with, work 5 DCs into corner, then keep going around the blanket in the same direction, this time alternating front and back post double crochet (FPDC and BPDC). When you get to the corners of this row, you will want to continue the pattern of alternating front and back post double crochet, but you will work three stitches around the corner post.

So, for example, if you get to the corner post and you are supposed to work a front post DC, then work a front post DC, a back post DC, and a front post DC all around that corner post.  Then in the next stitch you would continue the alternating pattern, working the opposite of whichever stitch you just used (in this example, you would work a back post DC). Just remember that you are always alternating front and back post double crochet around the whole blanket, you just happen to be working three of those stitches around the same post when you are working the corners.

Rounds 3 – 4: When you finish round 2, work 3 alternating front post/back post DCs into the corner you started with and repeat round 2. Always match your post double crochets to so that they are poking out in the same direction as the row below. I did four rounds total for the border of my blanket, but you can go around as many times as you’d like to get your desired border height. When you are finished with your border, slip stitch into starting stitch and tie off.
