Beginner Colorful Crochet Scarves

crochet colorful scarves

Hello! Hannah here :). Thank you so much for stopping by for the pattern to the Beginner Colorful Crochet Scarves. All of these scarves are made with alternating rows of HDC and half double slip stitch.

However, I wanted to see how inserting my hook in different ways would change the look of each of them. I love how something as simple as changing which loop to go into can create such different looks. They are still very beginner friendly, even though I am showing you how to insert your hook into the different loops.

For the orange colored scarf I worked into the front loop only, for the gold colored scarf I worked under both loops (like normal) and for the purple colored scarf I worked into the back loop only.

In my beginning journey, experimenting with the half double crochet stitch really helped me understand how crochet can be so flexible and unique.

Below is a video where I show how to work each of the stitches in these scarves if you’d like to watch before you get started. In the video I also show how to tie off when you finish your scarf, how to weave in your ends and how to add tassels.

Let’s chat about the yarn I’m using. It’s called Patons Alpaca Blend. It’s a nice acrylic and wool blend with a matte finish. I like how the stitches really were defined. However, it is slowly getting out of production. If you click the link in the pattern, you will see discontinued shades and you can still order what is left.

It is a 5 bulky weight yarn, and luckily that means you can substitute any 5 bulky weight yarn and have about the same results.

However, you also can substitute a 4-weight yarn, just make your starting chain to match the length of the scarf you’d like to make.

Here is a chart that can give you some size suggestions according to age:

2 skeins Yam, Butternut or Petunia

J/6.00mm hook, tapestry needle, scissors

Half Double Crochet (HDC): Yarn over (YO), insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all three loops on hook.

Half Double Slip Stitch (HDSS): YO, insert your hook, YO and pull up a loop and pull directly through two loops on hook.

Pattern

Chain 185 or make a chain that measures the desired length of your scarf.

ROW 1: Starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 HDC into each chain. Chain 2 and turn.

ROW 2: (The turning chain does not count as a stitch.) Work 1 HDSS into each stitch across the row. Chain 2 and turn.

ROW 3: (The turning chain does not count as a stitch.) Work 1 HDC into each stitch across the row. Chain 2 and turn.

Repeat rows 2 through 3 until your scarf measures about 5 inches wide.

For a variation of this pattern, try working in the front loop only or the back loop only. In the picture below you can see the difference between each version: the scarf on the left is from inserting my hook under both loops (like normal), the middle scarf is working in the back loop only and the scarf on the right is front loop only.

When you finish your scarf, tie off and weave in all ends with a tapestry needle. If you’d like you can add tassels by cutting about 40 ten inch pieces of yarn and tying them to each end of your scarf. To make a tassel, take two pieces of yarn and fold them in half and insert the folded end through a space on the end of your scarf. Pull out the folded end so that it makes a loop, then pull the ends through the loop and pull tightly to make a knot.
