Crochet Modified Daisy Stitch

crochet modified daisy stitch

I’m not sure of the official name for this stitch. Previously I have shared a stitch called Simple Daisy, which also is known as Simple Star stitch. I am using the same basic idea but adding a modification of yarning over before inserting my hook each time, so therefore I just am calling it Modified Daisy.

If I come across it referred in another way, I will come back and edit the post. I am enjoying using this stitch in the blanket I am currently working on for my niece. She is decorating a nautical themed nursery and I brainstormed around for a stitch that would give me some texture without being too bulky.

I love the results I am getting using Caron Simply Soft yarn with an H size hook. I’m finding that the sides stay very straight and it is very hard to miss any stitches at all. Perfect for when you’d rather keep your hands busy but watch Netflix and not worry about counting. I tested it for you!

Here’s the written pattern to how I am working the stitch:

Start with an uneven number of chains. yarn over (YO) and pull up a loop in the second chain from the hook, YO and pull up a loop in the third chain from the hook, YO and skip over the next chain and insert your hook into the next chain and pull up a loop. YO and pull through all seven loops on your hook. CH 1.

*YO and insert your hook into the chain one space and pull up a loop, YO and insert your hook into the last chain space you worked into and pull up a loop, YO and skip over the next chain and insert your hook into the next space and pull up a loop. YO and pull through all seven loops. CH 1. Repeat from * to the end of the row. CH 3 and turn. (The first of these chains is the one that closes the loops.)

Row 2: YO and work into the second chain from the hook and pull up a loop, insert your hook into the next chain and pull up a loop, skip the next stitch, YO and pull up a loop in the next space. YO and pull through all the loops. CH 1.

*YO and insert your hook into the chain space and pull up a loop, YO and insert your hook into the next space and pull up a loop, skip over one stitch, YO and insert your hook into the next space and pull up a loop. YO and pull through all loops on your hook. Repeat from * to the end of the row, CH 3 and turn. ..
Repeat row 2.

This stitch allows you to customize the size of any project because all you need to do is start with an UNEVEN number of chains.

Now, I know that I have some visual learners as well and so I did my best videoing and explaining the stitch in the clip below:

Once you’ve mastered this stitch you’ll be ready for this fun Crochet Modern Nautical Baby Blanket pattern!
